A source said: “The thought of Coronation Street without Sue and Audrey is not worth thinking about.

“Bosses are thrilled she’s agreed to stay for another year.”

Actress Sue arrived on the street as Audrey in 1979 and stayed on and off for three years.

She then took a two year break before rejoining the soap and becoming full time in 1985.

Audrey has been at the centre of some of the soap’s biggest storylines including surviving murder attempts from son-in-law Richard Hillman.

And in 2022 Audrey was central in a hard-hitting storyline when she tried to take her own life amid her battle with loneliness.

The source added: “Audrey was rightly at the centre of the street last year with son Stephen unmasked as a serial killer before being killed himself.

“Audrey moving on will be a big part of the cobbles going forward.”

Sue’s new deal will see her joins fellow Corrie icons Bill Roache, Sally Dynevor and Michael Le Vell.

Soap star Michael has played mechanic Kevin Webster for 41 years with his character married to Sally before their on-screen divorce.

Sally, now Sally Metcalfe after marrying Tim, has clocked up 38 years.

A source said: “Sally and Mike are two of Corrie’s most beloved stars.

“Bosses were desperate to keep them and they were happy to sign. They both love the show.”

However there are also set to be three major exits this year with Peter Ash leaving as Paul Foreman, Lisa George exiting as Beth Tinker and Alex Bain quitting his role as Simon Barlow.
