Coronation Street clarifies ‘glaring Joel plot-hole’ after fans left baffled

Coronation Street's Joel Deering stood under a street lamp at night, looking worse for wear

Friday’s episode of Coronation Street saw questions surrounding Joel Deering’s (Calum Lill) murder finally answered but intriguingly, that doesn’t appear to be the end of the matter.

After weeks of speculation, the instalment confirmed Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) killed Joel, with boyfriend Max Turner (Paddy Bever) helping to cover up the crime for her.

After witnessing Joel strangling Max, Lauren lashed out to protect him, and was horrified when Joel dropped dead on the tracks.

Poor Lauren was beside herself as she worried about what her actions would mean for her future and that of son Frankie, but Max tried his best to reassure her.

In a panic, the teens threw Joel’s body over the bridge and into the water – but fans of the ITV soap couldn’t help notice an error in this particular part of the story.

When a group of boys discovered Joel’s body in a river earlier this year, they found him in a body bag. In Friday’s episode, Max and Lauren failed to hide Joel’s body in anything.

Due to the fact so many audience members remembered this, it has left them wondering if this was a plot hole, or if another twist is going to be delivered regarding the storyline later down the line.

Taking to social media platform X, a Corrie fan wrote: ‘So Joel landed in a body bag in the river then…?!’, while another echoed the confusion and said: ‘Glaring plot hole. Joel was found in a bag. #corrie ends by Max saying “stick to this story” but the writers failed to stick to their own story.’

The Conversation Street podcast account also noted some other plot points amid discussing Joel.

They pondered: Unanswered questions from the big “reveal” episode: 1) Who put Joel in a body bag, because it clearly wasn’t Max and Lauren? 2) Who was Ronnie talking to and what did they end up doing? 3) Where did Kit go with the notes about Nathan?.’

Away from this potentially being a plot hole let’s not forget that this is a soap, so it is very possible something is still to come regarding Joel’s death and the body bag.

So, while the evil solicitor is dead, this storyline is far from over.

Coronation Street clarified to Metro that the running water from the river dragged Joel’s clothes out of shape, meaning there actually wasn’t a body bag at all.

‘I hadn’t worked for two years before this and I really struggled to find my feet as I started,’ actor Calum Lill revealed in a chat with us recently, discussing this storyline.

‘For about six months, watching the episodes back I was beating myself up. I’d watch the episodes with my fiancée and I’d go upstairs and she’d know to leave me for a bit because I was beating myself up. It took that time to try and get into the character.

‘I worked so hard. I know that there’s definitely better actors than me but I don’t think anybody else could have put in as much work as I did. Because I just said, if I can give this 100% and I leave and I don’t work for years, at least I know that there’s no more I could have done.

‘For that, it was up at 5.30am, I’d come into work and would be in work for about 15 hours. I’d get home for about 10.30pm at night, I’d eat some food quickly and then I’d do another two hours of learning lines and then do it again for about three or four months when I was busy.

‘Looking back, I’m finished and I can sleep now and I have time and I can see my friends. But that’s probably the happiest time I had, it was amazing. I am proud of my work, not necessarily because I think I’m great but because I’ve not had that opportunity to work that hard before.’
