Coronation Street: Full List of Cast Returns and Exits Shaping the Future of the ITV Soap

A compilation image of Coronation Street characters Gail Platt, Debbie Webster and Rowan Cunliffe.

There are plenty of comings and goings on the cobbles in the coming weeks, with several Coronation Street cast changes confirmed

While fans of the ITV soap have recently seen the return of killer Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison) and the final appearance of evil Joel Deering (Calum Lill) after a series of flashbacks revealed his killer, there’s set to be more hellos and goodbyes in Weatherfield.

Here’s the lowdown on who’s returning and who’s leaving…

CORONATION STREET CAST RETURNS

Rowan Cunliffe (Emrhys Cooper)

Emrhys Cooper will be back on screen as Rowan Cunliffe in the coming weeks as the sinister cult storyline reaches its end after being rested during recent months.

The plot saw Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) entwined in the suspicious Altovalent Institute, where leader Rowan preyed on her vulnerabilities, getting her to invest in a research centre and turn on her neighbours. He also conned Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) out of £40,000.

After finally seeing his true colours, Amy and Leanne teamed up to bring him down and Rowan was eventually arrested. However, we later heard he’d pleaded not guilty to blackmail and fraud, meaning the case will go to trial.

Emrhys confirmed his return to filming after a months-long break back in September via his Instagram Stories, meaning Rowan’s on-screen return is imminent…

When is Rowan Cunliffe returning to Coronation Street? December 2024.

Alya Nazir (Sair Khan)

Sair Khan is reprising her role as Alya Nazir in the coming days after returning to filming after maternity leave.

The actress confirmed she’d given birth to a baby boy back in May – just two days after her on-screen departure aired.

Alya’s temporary exit saw her leave for Dublin after accepting a new job offer.

Despite the mystery surrounding her return, Alya’s time in Dublin has hugely benefited her.

Sair recently told us: ‘Where we find her is not where you expect her to be, and where you expect her to show up. So that throws a spanner in the works at the very beginning. Dee-Dee is one of her best friends, so she will know what has been going on, but where Alya finds herself is in a very compromised situation of her own when she gets back.’

When is Alya Nazir returning to Coronation Street? Wednesday 27 November.

CORONATION STREET CAST EXITS

Gail Platt (Helen Worth)

You’ll have been hard-pressed to not have heard that Corrie icon Helen Worth is set to leave the show after 50 years of playing Gail Platt.

The actress announced the news back in June, and her exit is set to play out over the festive season as she prepares to tie the knot to Jesse Chadwick.

While we know Gail won’t be killed off, it looks like there are a number of hurdles she and partner Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson) will have to overcome for their happy ever after.

In an exclusive chat Metro, Corrie boss Kate Brooks admitted that Gail is oblivious as ‘bombs go off all around her,’ until she makes some discoveries that leave her questioning everything she has ever done.

‘This is a story with the Platts at the heart of it, it’s really festive,’ she told us. ‘It’s a story about how secrets impact and implode on a family, so there’s a lot of betrayals, and lots of secrets are exposed during this episode.

Kate continued: ‘It was really important to make sure that her departure felt really fitting and in keeping with who she is as a character.’

When is Gail Platt leaving Coronation Street? Late December.

Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson)

Gail’s exit story was originally set to involve her reuniting with her former husband Martin Platt, but after Sean Wilson left the show after filming had started, the story was quickly redrafted and John Thomson was brought back as Jesse Chadwick.

Jesse’s return was only ever temporary, and he’s set to depart to tie in with Gail’s exit – but whether they will ride off into the sunset together remains to be seen…

When is Jesse Chadwick leaving Coronation Street? Late December.

Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney)

Debbie Webster is set to be killed off in a harrowing storyline, which kicks off in 2025.

Viewers will see the character – first played by Sue Devaney in 1984 – diagnosed with dementia in the coming months, with a long-running storyline planned as the disease takes hold.

It’s one of many major plots new Corrie boss Kate Brooks has planned after taking the helm earlier this year.

A source told Metro ‘there will not be a dry eye in the house’ as Debbie’s story unfolds, saying her exit will be ‘one to remember for years’.

‘It’s one of the show’s biggest storylines of the year and a real chance for Sue to finally get her time in the spotlight – it will just be devastating for fans that it will effectively be her final storyline,’ the insider told us.
