Alya exiled after stabbing development as her own violent ordeal is revisited in Coronation Street
Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) was met with hostility in tonight’s Coronation Street when it was revealed that she was representing murderer Matty Radcliffe (Seamus McGoff).
Matty was arrested for the murder of his brother Mason, who died from a stab wound last week.
In tonight’s episode, George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) revealed that he was only set to get a basic funeral, with no family involved.
Having taken Mason in in the last weeks of his life as he attempted to better himself, Tim and Sally Metcalfe (Joe Duttine and Sally Dynevor) called together a group of locals in a bid to discuss how they could give Mason a better send off.
Though Tim was unsure whether people would be willing to donate to a fundraiser given Mason’s history, Alya argued that she would happily donate.
Alya then reflected on her own ordeal, having been stabbed by a far-right extremist who had been inspired by propaganda videos made by Max Turner (Paddy Bever) in 2023.
She pointed out that despite his faults, Mason was still a victim of knife crime, insisting that her own scars proved that there were too many people targeted by this particular act of violence.
However, her morals were later tested when she arrived at a business lunch with a colleague to discuss Matty’s defence, having taken on his case.
As her colleague discussed how they could use Matty’s upbringing in his defence, as well as the fact that he wasn’t the one to bring the knife into the fight, Alya appeared uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation.
Sean was horrified that Alya was representing Matty, and though Adam argued that everyone was entitled to legal representation, the barman laid into Alya.
He argued that she must be desperate to give her career a boost if she was prepared to ‘defend the indefensible’, and told her to enjoy the money, before kicking her out of the pub.
Will Alya continue to represent Matty, or will she have a change of heart?
