Coronation Street DS Swain star verbally abused by fan in brutal hate crime storyline

EXCLUSIVE: Coronation Street favourite Vicky Myers has lifted the lid on the public reaction to her divisive character DS Swain as the detective embarks on another nail-biting case

Coronation Street’s Vicky Myers revealed she was once hurled abuse “from a fan” just months into starting her new role as DS Swain.

Over the past few years, ITV fans have got to know the blonde bombshell as the no-nonsense copper who has worked on some of the ITV soap’s most tense storylines. The 42-year-old has been responsible for locking away villainous bad boys including Corey Brent, Justin Rutherford and almost Stephen Reid.

Her character is set to become more of a permanent addition to the ITV cobbles over the next few weeks. Viewers will get a peek under her hard shell and see what she is like at home when she hangs up the police badge for the night.

It’s fair to say the detective has become a staple on the street, but it hasn’t always been plain sailing for the beloved actress on the show. Speaking to Daily Star and other press, Vicky revealed that within the first few weeks of her new role on Coronation Street, she was on the receiving end of some abuse from a disgruntled fan.

Corrie’s DS Swain star was ‘shouted abuse by a fan’ during a shopping trip

She told us: “I think being in this iconic show, pretty much as soon as I started, [I experienced backlash]. It was the hate crime storyline, and when viewers knew that it was Corey [Brent] who killed Seb [Franklin], I received some comments.

“I was in my local shopping centre, and somebody shouted a bit of abuse at me because my character had arrested the wrong person. And obviously, that has aired but we shot it a few weeks before, so I was kind of like, ‘Sorry, what?’

“I didn’t understand where it was coming from and then it suddenly dawned on me what was going on.” Thankfully, the star hasn’t experienced any further backlash in person since.

She went on to explain that her character can be quite divisive which can cause some upset from fans online. Vicky said: “In general, people either love or loathe her, but I’ve had quite a bit of love for her for the past couple of years.

“But who knows? I’ll cope with it fairly well.” The actress may be thrown through another loop in the next few months, when her character slaps the cuffs on TV favourite Roy Cropper [David Nielson].

Last week, fans were shocked to discover that Lauren Bolton [Cait Fitton] has disappeared from the famous cobbles. It doesn’t take long before suspicion falls on the café owner, who struggles not to accidentally incriminate himself in the gruelling police interview.

Speaking about the new development, Vicky shared what it was like to arrest such a beloved character on the show. The soap star confessed: “It was terrible. It was awful.

“When I read it in the script I just thought, ‘Oh no, this is just going to go in the books’ because everybody’s so supportive of each other. He is wonderful but I think there might be a fair bit of backlash, but that’s okay, I can handle it.

“Swain can handle it, she’s not bothered about that.” Vicky then showered her co-star with praise as she reflected on the time they spent working together.

She gushed: “Working with David is, wow, what a human being. He is so generous and so warm and so considerate. His talent is beyond so to sit with him and work with him so closely, it’s really been a joy and I’ve got so much respect for the man. He is an icon in every sense.”
