Coronation Street’s Jack P Shepherd has dismissed suggestions that he should win at the National Television Awards for his recent storyline as David Platt. On his podcast, On the Sofa, which he co-hosts with fellow Corrie actors Ben Price and Colson Smith, a listener suggested that his portrayal of David, who was recently hit by a car and hospitalised, deserved recognition.

The incident followed a plotline where David found himself in debt to gangster Harvey Gaskell and appeared to plan to get himself run over. This led to speculation that Jack could be a contender for an award at the upcoming National Television Awards.

However, Jack, who has portrayed David since 2000, brushed off the suggestion, stating: “I don’t think so. Do you know why? Because it’s been on in March and the NTAs are when?” When Colson replied “September”, Jack retorted: “Forget it. You basically need to do something the week before to win.”

Colson added: “You basically need to die to win.”

Despite further encouragement from listeners, Jack remained sceptical about his chances of winning an award, reports Leicestershire Live.

Jack has been dropping hints about his status on the soap as he nears an impressive 25 years. He let slip that his initial gig was meant to be short-term, telling the Manchester Evening News: “I was only in the show for three months originally, and then they kept ringing my mum up and my agent to say ‘Yeah, we’ll extend it’.”

Elaborating further he said: “So 25 years is a long time for anyone, but I get yearly contracts now; I don’t get three-month ones.”

He also mentioned: “I’m only ever here for a year, and it runs out this year! I don’t know, they might not continue it, they might go for someone else. But I’m still enjoying it.”

Fans were left biting their nails when Jack seemed to indicate he might be exiting during a chit-chat on This Morning last week. Discussing his run on the soap, he mentioned: “I think it’s about 25 years next month. It would have been nice to kind of reach that milestone but, sadly, tonight’s the end, but I’ve loved every minute.”

However, in a twist during the live broadcast of On the Sofa, he confessed to being “a little bit devious”. Explaining his antics, he declared: “When they were saying, ‘will David die, won’t David die blah blah blah’, I’m supposed to say, ‘who knows, who knows’, but I thought that was a bit s***. So I just thought I would go, ‘yeah’.”

Wrapping up, Jack exposed that the people behind the scenes were oblivious to his prank, confessing: “It made me laugh, and it made the green room laugh.”
