‘Come off it!’ fume Coronation Street fans as they ‘switch off’ over ‘travesty’ Roy Cropper court twist
Reaction to the soap's story has been largely poor among fans online
CORONATION Street fans have been left switching off the soap over its latest scenes of Roy Cropper being sent to prison.
The character, played by actor David Neilson, has been at the heart of the drama on the ITV show after being charged and tried over the murder of Lauren Bolton.
Viewers have been left disgusted and outraged that the lovable cafe owner has been implicated in the scandal despite being nothing other than a friend to Lauren.
During last night’s episode, Roy was left crushed when it was confirmed that he would remain behind bars until the date of his trial.
In the episode, Dee-Dee Bailey tried her best to do all she could to get Roy off the charges but it did not pay off as he was still sent down by the judge.
The CPS barrister created an image of Roy as a violent man with form for abduction as he detailed his past crimes.
Having been marched into the cells, Roy was allowed one phone call home after the ordeal of his day.
He appeared to make a call to the cafe landline but with everyone at the pub, believing Roy would call their mobiles, no one picked up the phone to the lonely pensioner.
Fans were left sickened at the scenes and launched a campaign to save Roy from behind bars.
Taking to X – formerly Twitter – one disgruntled viewer wrote: “Seriously #Corrie Come off it Roy wouldn’t hurt a #Fly.”
Another went on to add: “Seriously #Corrie are we doing a Deirdre on Roy Cropper!? Enough of this I say in an authoritarian tone. Enough! #CoronationStreet #FreeRoy.”
A third fumed: “Anyone else switching off #Corrie whilst this Roy travesty is airing?”
Before a fourth said: “This episode is depressing! Roy was put in prison. Now they all missed his one phone call. This is awful.”
As a fifth blasted the soap for charging him with murder purely for the fact his fingerprints were found on a condom.
They wrote: “I know it’s a soap, but refusing Roy bail.. No body, very dodgy circumstantial evidence.. I mean fingerprints on a condom!”
Another took issue with DS Swain being hellbent on painting Roy out to be the murderer as they pointed out her list of failed crimes to prove that se wasn’t very good at her job.
They penned: “DS Swain isn’t very good at her job, is she? Wrongly gets Kelly sent to prison for Seb’s death, couldn’t help Amy, didn’t do anything about the racists until Alya was stabbed, and now she’s sent Roy to prison!! #Corrie.”
Fear is mounting among soap fans as to whether the Cobbles icon will be sent down for good or if the person who really took Lauren will be brought to justice.
