Coronation Street legend’s return ‘sealed’ 37 years after debut for Jim McDonald funeral

Coronation Street could be welcoming back a soap legend for Jim McDonald’s funeral, according to a new fan theory.
Jim (Charles Lawson) made his debut on the soap way back in 1989, rocking up to Weatherfield with wife Liz (Beverley Callard), and their twin sons Steve (Simon Gregson) and Andy (Nicholas Cochrane).
And it’s fair to say Jim – who was a former soldier who served in the Royal Engineers – caused plenty of drama on the cobbles. From alcohol addiction and domestic violence to several stints in prison, Jim’s time in Weatherfield has not been short of chaos.
Jim appeared on-and-off on the ITV soap from 1989 to his most recent appearance in 2018, when he made his comeback to try and swindle Liz out of her money. He was eventually caught out and went on the run in 2018 and has not been seen since.

However, on the soap recently Steve found out that Jim has been seriously ill, and although he went to the hospital to reach out to his estranged father, Steve didn’t go in to see him.
Next week though, Steve will uncover the sad truth that Jim has died, leaving him heartbroken. And now, with Jim’s death confirmed fans are predicting a huge return for his funeral. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, viewers reckon son Andy could make a cobbles comeback.
One person wrote: “They should bring Steve’s brother Andy back for Jim’s funeral.” Another chimed in and declared: “Yes we never see Andy!” A third penned: “They need to bring in some of Jim’s side of the family or have Steve’s twin Andy return with his family!”
Andy himself played a part in several big storylines on Coronation Street over the years. He had disastrous romances with several residents including Amy Nelson (Louise Duprey) and Paula Maxwell (Judy Brook). He also worked at the Rovers and was caught up in Gerry Turner’s (Keith Woodason) armed siege .

However, actor Nicholas was forced to leave the soap alongside other notable characters when a new producer arrived in 1997. The storyline that saw Andy move away from the cobbles involved him becoming a teaching post in Spain.
The star has returned plenty of times over the years to make guests appearances as Andy in 2000 and 2004. He was last seen in 2009, when Andy returned for Steve’s wedding to Becky Granger (Katherine Kelly).
