Coronation Street spoilers: Major twist as iconic character has a secret son none of us knew about

Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) recently had a shock on Coronation Street when her ex, Denny (Danny Cunningham) turned up on the cobbles. Denny is the father of Paul (Peter Ash) and Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and heard Paul’s radio interview.

He admitted he’d been a terrible  dad and begged for the chance to make amends – only to blow his chance by leaving Paul at home alone, where he soon got into breathing difficulties and had to be taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

After this near-tragedy, Bernie caught Denny trying to steal Paul’s electric wheelchair, which he’d already arranged the sale of in a phone call.

He tried to cover by saying he had a mate who could service it cheaply, but Bernie didn’t believe him.

She threatened to call the police to get his story checked out unless he left Weatherfield. He chose to leave.

Denny’s arrival really unsettled Bernie, and not just because he’s quite obviously a wrong ‘un.

There was something else that Bernie was desperate to hide and the key seemed to lie in a box full of memorabilia that Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) saw her going through.

Well, the secret will soon be out. It turns out that Bernie has a third child who hasn’t been mentioned before.

And what we want to know is, with the children we know about being called Gemini and Apollo, what’s this one called?

Zodiac, apparently. Bernie admits to Dev that Zodiac – or Zac for short – was taken into care when he was a young child.

He was later adopted and changed his name to Christopher Green.

Because Paul is nearing the end of his life it’s made Bernie think that she should make every effort to find Christopher and try to make amends with him. So she sets out to track down her long-lost son.

Finding him proves to be a challenge.

When one of the Christopher Greens on her list turns out to have died of cancer, Bernie feels deflated, fearing that she’s missed the chance to be reunited with her son. She hits the booze trying to drown her sorrows.

Is all hope lost?
