Coronation Street's Aggie Bailey could be heading back to the street

Coronation Street’s Aggie Bailey could be heading back to the street after a twist in the latest episode of the ITV soap.

A recent episode heavily hinted actress Lorna Laidlaw had left the role for good, after being offscreen for months. Aggie is currently in Birmingham caring for a relative but she has yet to return to the street, with her last seen on screen last June.

She broke the news to her family in December that she was unable to return for the time being with her show future up in the air, but a scene this week left fans convinced she was not coming back. After a fire tore through the builders yard amid Aggie’s husband Ed Bailey’s gambling issues, Ed was accused of starting the fire on purpose for the insurance money.

With him in serious debt, son Michael refused to forgive his dad as the police questioned whether the fire was started intentionally. Michael, who was trapped in the fire and could have died, soon called his mum Aggie and told her everything about the fire and the gambling.

This led to Aggie calling time on her marriage to Ed, telling him she wanted nothing to do with him. Devastated, Ed revealed Aggie had washed her hands of him and basically confirmed a split.

With that, it seemed to indicate Aggie was not returning, with viewers convinced it meant a permanent departure for her and actress Lorna. With Aggie thought to be gone, a twist on Wednesday teased a U-turn might be on the cards.

Michael learned from the police that the fire was being treated as an accident, with faulty extension cables said to be to blame for the blaze. Michael was horrified as he realised Ed had not started the fire, while Ed has yet to tell him he knew the building was ablaze and did nothing to stop it.

As Ed learned the police’s verdict, Michael apologised to him and revealed he’d been in contact with Aggie to tell her what had happened. As Ed’s daughter Dee-Dee asked what Aggie had to say about it all, he revealed they couldn’t talk properly due to a bad signal, so they messaged each other instead.

While Ed seemed deflated, possibly suggesting things weren’t looking good for him and his wife, he did say Aggie was upset but they were in contact. So is there hope for their marriage, and could the drama lead to Aggie’s return to Weatherfield?

The fact Aggie now knows the truth could suggest a return is still possible. That said Ed didn’t say if Aggie was keen to make a go of things or if she stood by her decision to end things.
