Beverley Callard has been left “completely wiped out” after getting the results from her cancer treatment. The actress, 69, announced in February this year that she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and has been keeping fans up to date with her health ever since.

Earlier this week, she explained that despite having her cancer removed during an operation, it had spread to a lymph node and is awaiting further test result. Keeping herself busy, Beverley had been spending hours trying to redecorate her new home in Ireland, where she has moved with her husband Jon so she can star in the soap Fair City, but fans were concerned she was overdoing it, and they were proven right.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday night, Beverley said: “Well, just an update. You were all right, every comment, everything, all sent with love, I know. You were right. I have completely overdone it and, as you know, I got the results on Thursday and I’m waiting for more but I’d been decorating like crazy doing like eight to 10 hour days just trying to get everything finished for Jon coming back. And then Friday, I was really, really tired. Today, I’m completely wiped out. I’ve felt shocking all day.

“I woke up and just felt as if I’d not been to sleep at all. Honestly, I feel the same, I’ve been back to bed a couple of times so you were all right. Everybody says to me ‘Oh, Beverley, you’re so strong, you’re so strong.’ I’m actually not!

“I’m headstrong, which is not a good thing, it’s not a quality, I don’t think. So it’s been one of those days. Jon has just made me rest. I had a bath, which was an effort. I put my pyjamas on, which was an effort and that’s it. So, hopefully I will feel better tomorrow but I feel poorly today.”

The I’m A Celebrity…South Africa star was inundated with further messages of support in the comments section of her post, with one fan writing: “Don’t overdo it, keep taking regular rests and look after yourself lovely lady. We are all rooting for you.xxx”

Another said: “Be kind to yourself Beverley, your body has been through a lot and there’s no shame in resting. Loving you in South Africa…you’re a warrior, sending love from Manchester,” and a third wrote: “Aww, bless you, pet. Know that we are all behind you. You are an absolutely beautiful person. Sending you so much love and the biggest hug.”

Beverley, who is best known for having played Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald on Coronation Street on and off over the course of 30 years, recently explained that her consultant contacted her to say the surgery “went really well,” and they managed to “cut the cancer out” but further tests were needed.

She can currently be seen competing on I’m A Celebrity…South Africa, which was filmed before she received her cancer diagnosis

She said: “They’re pleased with how the surgery went. And they also two three lymph nodes. And this is how she explained it to me. The lymph nodes are like a staircase. And if cancer is in the lymph nodes, it sort of tends to climb up the stairs.

“That’s oversimplifying it, but just to help explain. And they took three, and the cancer is in the first lymph node. It’s not in the second two and three. So it is there, but it’s only small.

So what happens now is they send that to America. I’ve no idea why they send it to America, but they do, apparently, that’s normal. They send it to America to see how aggressive the cancer is. And then I will know about that in approximately two weeks. So it’s waiting again, but never mind. That’s just the way it is. If it’s aggressive, then I’ll have to undergo chemo first and then after that, radiotherapy.”

“If it’s not aggressive, I will have the radiotherapy as was planned. So I’ve just got to wait and see again. So in one way it was kind of good news that the surgeries worked well which I’m really pleased about but because it’s in the lymph nodes it’s still a worry and still a waiting time which is an absolute pain but there we go and I’m sure loads of you have been through the same thing so that’s the state of play and thank you for caring I really appreciate that very much indeed and what you say to me and the comments you make.”

Beverley, who is also known for her role as Flo Henshaw on Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, first revealed news of her diagnosis in February during an appearance on RTE’s Late Late Show.

She said: “I’ve had some tests just before I left the UK, and literally, 15, 20 minutes before I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on, and I was quite nervous and thinking, ‘I hope everybody thinks I’m all right’, whatever.

“And my consultant rang me and said, ‘you’ve got to come back to the UK’ I said, ‘Well, I can’t possibly, I’ve just taken a new job’. I said ‘I’m away for a month’, and I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“But I’m fine, I’m absolutely fine. My head was a bit mashed for the first few days. It’s very early stages, and I’m along with thousands of other women as well.”
