Personal Ordeal Revealed As He Opens Up About Rare Tumour Battle
The partner of Coronation Street (Coronation Street) star Sair Khan (Sair Khan) has shared a deeply emotional account of his health journey, revealing he feared he would not survive major surgery to remove part of his pelvis.
Nathan Chilton, 39, has spoken candidly about his long-running battle with a rare bone tumour and the life-altering procedures he has undergone over more than a decade.
Rare Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Chilton, originally from Derbyshire, was diagnosed in 2013 with chondroblastoma—a rare, non-cancerous bone tumour—after experiencing persistent groin pain.
Initial scans revealed a squash-ball-sized lesion, which was surgically removed. However, years later, the tumour returned, leading to far more complex and invasive treatment
What followed would become a prolonged medical journey involving multiple surgeries, long recovery periods, and significant physical and emotional challenges.
Major Surgery Left Him Fighting For Survival
In 2022, Chilton underwent an internal hemipelvectomy, an extensive eight-hour operation that removed approximately 75% of the right side of his pelvis.
The procedure required reconstruction using a titanium plate and is considered one of the most complex orthopedic surgeries performed.
During the operation, he experienced severe blood loss, at one point believing he might not survive.
“I thought it was lights out,” he recalled, describing the moment as surreal and overwhelming.
Following the surgery, he spent three weeks recovering at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, where he had to relearn basic mobility, including how to walk again.
Further Health Complications Added To The Struggle
Chilton’s recovery journey became even more complicated when doctors later discovered that the tumour had spread to his lungs.
While the lung nodules are now reported to be stable, the diagnosis added another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult experience.
Despite the seriousness of his condition, he continues to live with ongoing monitoring and long-term medical care.
He has also been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, adding another chronic health condition to manage alongside his recovery.
Finding Strength Through Adversity
Reflecting on his journey, Chilton described his experience as a “rollercoaster” of physical and emotional challenges, marked by repeated surgeries and ongoing uncertainty.
However, he also emphasized how the experience reshaped his outlook on life.
He explained that adversity helped him build resilience and encouraged him to focus on personal growth rather than limitation.
Rather than being defined by illness, he said he aims to use his experience as motivation and inspiration for others facing similar battles.
Chilton also shared a personal goal of documenting his journey to show his young son what is possible even after extreme medical hardship.
Hiking Challenge For Charity And Awareness
In a powerful step forward, Chilton is now preparing to take on the Peak District Ultra Challenge—a demanding 75km trek scheduled for July 4–5.
The event will see him walking long distances as part of a fundraising effort for Sarcoma UK, a charity supporting patients affected by rare cancers of the bone and soft tissue.
Although his condition is not classified as sarcoma, he received treatment through similar medical pathways, including specialist care, imaging, and major reconstructive surgery.
Chilton said his goal is to raise awareness and inspire others who have undergone major operations or life-changing diagnoses.
He hopes the challenge will demonstrate that recovery and achievement are still possible after severe health setbacks.
Support From Sarcoma UK
Representatives from Sarcoma UK have praised Chilton’s determination and resilience, highlighting how his experience reflects the challenges faced by many patients they support.
A spokesperson described his journey as extraordinary, noting the emotional and physical strength required to rebuild life after such extensive surgery.
They also emphasized the impact his fundraising and public story could have on raising awareness and providing hope for others navigating similar conditions.

A Story Of Survival, Recovery, And Perspective
Chilton’s story is one of long-term resilience in the face of repeated medical adversity—from rare tumour diagnosis to life-threatening surgery and ongoing health complications.
Now, as he prepares for a demanding endurance challenge, his focus has shifted toward advocacy, awareness, and personal purpose.
For many following his journey—including fans of Coronation Street star Sair Khan—the story stands as a reminder of how quickly life can change, and how determination can reshape what comes next.
