BBC viewers were left gobsmacked as Labour MP Lucy Powell rowed with Victoria Derbyshire live on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. Powell joined the show via video link, where Derbyshire quizzed her about a Facebook status she posted in 2022, demanding a general election after Liz Truss stepped down as prime minister and pointing out her “hypocrisy” at not demanding the same now.
Derbyshire said: “I want to ask you about something you put on Facebook when Liz Truss resigned. The Conservative prime minister resigned on the 20th October 2022 after 49 days in office. You posted: ‘Let the public decide the next prime minister. General election, now’. Do you want a general election now so the public can decide their next prime minister?”

Powell replied: “Well I think we were in very particular times after Liz Truss had crashed the economy, making big decisions that had nothing to do with what was in the Conservative manifesto and we were all paying the price for that-“
But she was cut off by an irate Derbyshire, who interrupted: “The principle… the principle, forgive me, if I may, the principle is the same, let the-“
Powell tried to say: “Well I don’t think it’s quite the same-“
Derbyshire again reiterated: “Well, the principle is the same. Let the public decide on the next prime minister, you wrote. So that situation could apply to now. Do you want the public to decide on the next prime minister now?”
Powell attempted to tell her: “Well we live in a parliamentary democracy, where the prime minister is chosen by MPs, that is the situation-“ but the host pointed out: “But you didn’t say that in October 2022.”

The stuttering Labour MP said: “What we had- what we had- what we’ve had then was two prime ministers in less than two months, one of whom came along and didn’t listen to anybody around her, the big institutions that support this country took some big decisions – for which every single one of us paid a very heavy price in inflation going through the roof and our mortgage rates going through the roof, after a real period of huge disruption-“
Derbyshire asked: “Right, so you don’t think there should be a general election now? Is that not hypocritical?”
The MP said: “No, I don’t. No, I don’t think it is, because I think what people actually want to see now is us getting on with the job, delivering on the manifesto that we were elected on only two years ago – a very bold and radical manifesto that’s still got many things in it that we need to follow through on.”
