Claire Sweeney steps away from Coronation Street for big TV role with soap icons
Claire Sweeney has reportedly taken a break from her role as Cassie Plummer on Coronation Street.
The actress, 53, best known for her role as Lindsey Corkhill in former Channel 4 soap Brookside, joined the cobbles last year as Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall) estranged mum Cassie.
Battling a drug addiction, her mum Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) planned to keep her presence in Weatherfield a secret but in true Corrie style, it wasn’t long before everything was revealed.
In recent months we’ve seen her clash with Abi Webster (Sally Carman) and secure a job at Kevin’s (Michael Le Vell) garage – and it seems she has somewhat of a fancy for the mechanic!
However, Claire is taking a step back from the cobbles as she films the second series of The Good Ship Murder, which also features former Corrie stars Catherine Tyldesley and Shayne Ward.
Claire plays manager Beverley Carnell in Channel 5 murder-mystery series.
Making her way to Weatherfield, chaotic Cassie found Tyrone and said that she’s his mum. This left Tyrone stunned, as he had spent his life under the impression his birth mother had died.
Moving past the secrets and lies, Tyrone decided to get to know Cassie, but things weren’t easy.
In recent months, however, Cassie has slowly shown her family that even though she makes mistakes, building relationships with her loved ones is incredibly important to her.
This comes after Claire signed on the dotted line for another year in Coronation Street. She told Cheshire Life Magazine: ‘I’ve just signed my contract for another year in Corrie and I’m really happy to fully invest all my time and energy into Cassie and see what develops.
‘I couldn’t be happier about the acting scenes I have done recently in Coronation Street with Dame Maureen Lipman in the Rovers, and with Alan Halsall and Jennie McAlpine in the Dobbs household.’
