Mary offers poignant advice to Bethany following her own ordeal of sexual abuse in Coronation Street

Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) has shared some emotional advice with neighbour Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon), reflecting on her own sexual abuse in Coronation Street.

Long term viewers of the ITV soap will remember that Mary previously spoke about how her son Jude was conceived when she was raped by her employer aged just fourteen. Mary was working as a nanny for the man’s two children at the time.

It was seven years ago that she confessed all to Bethany – recognising her relationship with Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper) as a similar situation.

Bethany was, of course, groomed by Nathan and later pimped out to his vile mates. After finally recognising him as the man he really is, she bravely reported him to the police and he was locked up.

However, earlier this month, he reappeared in Weatherfield.

Startled by his presence after so long away, she and boyfriend Daniel (Rob Mallard) charged down to his workplace and demanded answers from him.

Knowing his history, Bethany grew convinced that Nathan was responsible for Lauren’s (Cait Fitton) disappearance, and has been desperate to prove it – even going so far as to steal his phone.

She was further disgusted to find that Nathan had been subscribed to Lauren’s O-Vidz account, and was messaging other young blonde girls.

Realising that seeing him again had caused old feelings to resurface, her family began to think of a way to rid him from the area forever – and later that night, Nathan was attacked and left for dead.

Bethany suspected that Daniel was the one who had left Nathan hospitalised, which caused a rift between the two. However, it later transpired that Gary Windass (Mikey North) was responsible, and Bethany fell out with mum Sarah (Tina O’Brien) for not being entirely truthful with her.

In tonight’s (22nd May) episode, still shaken from the events of the last week, she continued to ignore Sarah’s calls.

As Bethany walked past Preston’s Petals, Mary pulled her in for a coffee and a chat, having noticed her unease.

Whilst not directly referencing her own abuse, Mary was reflective and told her that she needed to move on with her life and not let vile paedophile Nathan cause her any more issues.

The conversation seemed to be just the tonic, and she headed home to make amends with both Daniel and Sarah.

However, in upcoming scenes, we find out that she’s still convinced Nathan is responsible for Lauren’s murder, and will continue to investigate whether he played a part in it.

Is she putting herself in grave danger?
