Nicki Chapman Reveals Heartbreaking Moment She Collapsed in Tears After Doctors Found Golf-Ball-Sized Brain Tumour

TV presenter Nicki Chapman has shared the devastating moment her life changed forever after doctors discovered a golf-ball-sized brain tumour following a terrifying episode of sudden vision loss.

The much-loved broadcaster admitted she collapsed to the floor in tears after learning the shocking diagnosis.

“I was on my hands and knees, sobbing. I just wanted it to be gone,” Nicki recalled.

The 59-year-old presenter, best known for Escape to the Country and as a former Pop Idol judge, said the emotional impact of hearing the news was almost impossible to describe.

A Frightening Health Scare

Nicki’s ordeal began in May 2019 while she was recovering from knee surgery. Without warning, she developed slurred speech and suddenly lost part of her vision, prompting fears that she had suffered a stroke.

Doctors rushed to investigate, but brain scans revealed a very different diagnosis—a non-cancerous brain tumour roughly the size of a golf ball.

The discovery turned what seemed like a routine recovery into one of the most frightening experiences of her life.

“It Was Like a Slap”

Reflecting on the moment she received the diagnosis, Nicki said the emotional shock came in waves.

“It’s the initial shock of diagnosis and then the shock when you tell people—that’s even more distressing.”

She added:

“It’s like a slap.”

The presenter said the reality of explaining the diagnosis to family and friends was almost as overwhelming as hearing the news herself.

A Four-and-a-Half-Hour Operation

Nicki later underwent a four-and-a-half-hour operation to remove the tumour.

Fortunately, the growth was non-cancerous, and surgeons successfully removed it.

Although the operation saved her health, recovery brought unexpected challenges.

The Lasting Effects

Nicki has revealed that brain surgery left her with lingering cognitive difficulties, particularly when it comes to concentration and memory.

She now finds it much harder to process information and memorise television scripts, explaining that tasks which once came naturally require far more time and effort.

Despite these lasting effects, she has continued working on television, earning admiration from viewers for her resilience and determination.

A Career Beyond Television

Before becoming one of Britain’s most recognisable TV presenters, Nicki enjoyed a successful career in the music industry, working in public relations with some of the world’s biggest stars, including the Spice Girls, David Bowie, and Kylie Minogue.

She later became a familiar face on British television through Escape to the Country, joining the BBC property programme in 2009 alongside the late Jonnie Irwin.

Away from the spotlight, Nicki has been married to music executive Dave Shackleton since 1999, and the couple live together in West London.
