Coronation Street was full of emotional scenes on Monday night as Paul Foreman made a decision about his future following Friday's heartbreaking twist
Coronation Street fans were left in tears on Monday night as Paul Foreman made a decision about his future following Friday’s heartbreaking twist.
Cobbles favourite Paul was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) last year leaving him distraught. He kept his diagnosis a secret for some time but eventually told Billy Mayhew and those close to him what he was going through. Only recently, things have deteriorated for the cobbles favourite and Friday’s episode aired a powerful episode devoted entirely to a day in the life of Paul from his perspective.
The emotional episode was also dedicated to the memory of Rugby League legend Rob Burrow, who died from motor neurone disease (MND) last month. The episode saw Billy and Paul enjoy a special day together, knowing each moment could be their last, after they were told it was no longer safe for Paul to use the stair lift to leave the flat.
Friday’s episode started with Paul waking from a dream to discover his speech had drastically deteriorated and viewers then experienced the day with him through his inner thoughts and emotions in a voiceover from actor Peter Ash. Paul and Billy visited the church where they married, tasted beer bubbles in the Rovers and spent time with their families.

However, in a heartbreaking twist, Paul, who earlier this year asked Billy to help him end his life when the time comes, decided to go through with the plan. Billy was left horrified, begging his partner to change his mind, but Paul was certain. However, as the couple made devastating plans, they were interrupted by Chesney Brown, who revealed daughter Carys had an accident and they needed to go hospital.
He dropped the rest of the quads and son Joseph at the flat as he rushed to hospital with Carys and Gemma Winter. The children couldn’t sleep as they all spent time with Paul in the sitting room and the next day, as they all left to go home, Paul told his family he would see them soon. Billy picked up on this as Paul decided: “Not today”, deciding he didn’t want to say goodbye just yet.
On Monday night, Billy worried that Paul would want to go through with his plan but later he made his husband read out a message he had created on his Eyegaze device. The message said “there’s always something to hang on for” and that he wanted to “keep hanging on”, adding: “I want to stay for my family, friends and then there’s you. I’ll never be ready to say goodbye to you. I want to go on living for as long as I can, however I can, I’m going to let nature take its course.” Billy was left visibly moved over the words.
Taking to Twitter, now X, one person said: “Omg, Paul’s speech… #Corrie” with crying emojis, another wrote: “Oh Paul. #corrie” with a heartbroken emoji while a different viewer put: “#Corrie was an emotional rollercoaster.”
