Corrie Bernie star reveals famous wife’s heartfelt gesture after storyline ‘got too much’

Coronation Street star Jane Hazlegrove has opened up about her famous wife Isobel Middleton's sweet gesture after the ITV soap's storyline became "too much"

Corrie’s Jane Hazlegrove has been singing the praises of her famous wife’s support after admitting that her role on the soap became “too much.”

The star, known for her portrayal of Bernie Winter since her 2019 debut, has quickly won over fans as Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell), Paul (Peter Ash), and Kit’s (Jacob Roberts) mum.

Bernie’s Weatherfield journey has been chock-full of juicy plots, from Paul’s MND struggle to jail time. And this week has been particularly heart-wrenching, with Paul passing away from MND in tear-jerking scenes, surrounded by Bernie, Gemma, and stepdaughter Summer (Harriet Bibby).

Off-screen, Jane’s world is filled with love, thanks to her other half, fellow actress Isobel Middleton, known for her roles in Emmerdale and EastEnders. The duo, who’ve been an item for more than 28 years, sealed the deal in 2015.

Jane revealed a touching moment from Isobel when she found herself “unable to open the script” for the episode where Paul dies. In a chat with Liverpool Echo and other journos, Jane opened up about coping with the demanding and emotional storylines.

She confessed: “I’m an absolute wreck! I’m quite an emotional person anyway.”, reports the Liverpool Echo. The soap star then went on to recall how her wife stepped in after she was unable to open the script for Paul’s death episode at their home.

Jane revealed: “It is really hard. I couldn’t actually open this script at home, because I didn’t want to have that hanging around my dining room, if you know what I mean.” She continued: “So my missus took me off to a shepard’s hut in Northumbria, and we sat in the sunshine with a bottle of wine and read it together.”

Referring to the script, Jane added: “I thought it was going to be too much for me to have in the house, as it were.”

Jane’s wife Isobel is no stranger to appearing on screens either. Isobel has played three characters in Emmerdale over the years. She took on the role of Dr Lane in 2014, followed by a barrister role during Simon McManus’ 2018 trial. And in 2020, she played Jean Rawson on the soap set in the famous Dales.

But Emmerdale isn’t the only soap Isobel has starred in. Back in 2002, she played Sadie Banks on BBC’s EastEnders. And turning her hand to blockbusters, Isobel appeared in 2009’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
