Coronation Street's Violet Wilson is returning to the ITV soap very soon, with actress Jenny Platt reprising the role for the first time since 2011
Coronation Street viewers will sew a familiar face on the ITV soap soon, as a past character is returning.
After 16 years Violet Wilson, the mother of Dylan Wilson, is heading back to Weatherfield as part of a dark storyline. While it’s been 13 years since she was last featured in an episode, it was three years prior to this that she fled the Cobbles for good.Actress Jenny Platt will reprise her role for the first time since then as part of a huge new storyline involving Dylan. Sean Tully’s pal and the mother of his child will make a comeback in the coming weeks with scenes already filmed – but how long will she be back for, and why did she leave the show?
Who is Violet Wilson and who plays her?
Violet Wilson was a Rovers barmaid who worked with pal Sean on the ITV soap. She is the mother of teenager Dylan Wilson, and has always been played by actress Jenny Platt.
She was a former pupil of Ken Barlow, and after moving to the Street she struck up a romance with Jason Grimshaw. Violet also had romances with villain Charlie Stubbs and Jamie Baldwin on the ITV soap.
Sean and Violet agreed to have a child together after Violet’s initial split with Jamie, and her learning she had a reduced chance of fertility after she suffered an ectopic pregnancy and needed surgery. Violet fell pregnant with Sean’s child while she eventually got back with Jamie, and soon Sean felt pushed out.
Why did she leave Corrie, and when was she last on screen?
Violet and Sean fell out following her plans to raise baby Dylan with partner Jamie rather than him. Sean found out Violet only saw him as a donor and not Dylan’s father, leaving him threatening to take legal action.
Sean was unaware of Violet’s plans to flee with Jamie after he revealed he was moving away. As the pair got engaged, they packed up the car and secretly fled the Cobbles with Dylan back in 2008, 16 years ago.
Violet threw her phone out the window so that Sean could not get in contact with her, and he was unable to stop them leaving. He did make contact with them a couple of years later, leading to the visit to London.
Back in 2011, Violet made a very brief comeback as Sean visited their son Dylan amid trouble in paradise for her and Jamie. This was her last onscreen appearance 13 years ago, while she hasn’t been on the Cobbles since 2008.
Is she staying on the show?
The return of Violet isn’t permanent for the time being, with her co-star Antony Cotton confirming she would feature in around 12 episodes. He also revealed she was not staying, but he hoped to film with pal Jenny again soon.
It’s thought Violet will return to see Dylan after his involvement in the bullying storyline, before heading back to London. Antony told The Mirror: “I think we’re probably filming for about four weeks, she’s probably in like a dozen episodes or something. And then who knows, this storyline is gonna go on.
“So I hope that as long as it goes well and she enjoys it, I’m hoping that we might see her again because if there’s more of this stuff and it gets more more serious, one would imagine that we would perhaps see Violet that again.”
