Helen Worth is soon set to leave her role as Gail Platt in Coronation Street, having spent 50 years on the cobbles.

The iconic star is set to film her final scenes this week, the Daily Mail reports, with her story set to come to an end at the end of this year.

Show bosses have promised a happy ending for the character, who has been at the centre of some huge storylines over the years.

‘Gail won’t die. It didn’t feel like killing her off would be right,’ Iain MacLeod told the Daily Star.

‘Gail’s exit is a brilliant story, I thought “what do viewers want to see?”

‘Gail has had a hard life. She had a difficult childhood and some disastrous marriages. So, we thought what viewers really want is a happy ending for her, so that’s what we’re doing.

‘Helen loves the storyline,’ Iain continued.

‘Recently, she described it by saying, “It’s the perfect ending for Gail’, so I can sleep soundly at night.

‘You don’t want to inflict an ending on someone after 50 years that they’re not happy with.’

Last week, things took a dramatic turn for Gail when she suffered another heart attack.

Fortunately, things turned out alright and she was feeling quite positive the next day.

With new boyfriend Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson) at her bedside, Gail decided to suggest taking their relationship to the next level by asking him to marry her.

Jesse was quick to agree, leaving the pair very happy.

Viewers will have also noticed a change to the end credits at the end of the episode, as a heartbeat could be heard over the theme tune, before flatlining.

This came as Corrie partnered with the British Heart Foundation to raise awareness about heart disease.
