Audrey Roberts makes a sad admission over suicide attempt in emotional Coronation Street scenes
Back in 2022, Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) in Coronation Street tried to end her life.
She was seen in hospital all alone talking to a doctor, who wondered why she had taken so many sleeping pills.
Audrey told the doctor it was a mistake, but he was right to be concerned, as he had evidence that suggested she deliberately overdosed.
During an afternoon with her friends, Audrey opened up about experiencing loneliness after the death of her husband Alf, and how she recently felt suicidal. She confessed that her cataracts, alcohol dependency and the treatment by her family all contributed to her reaching the decision.
Fortunately, Audrey has made positive changes to her life and is a lot happier now than what she was.
However, in tonight’s (April 3) episode of the ITV soap, Audrey revisited the dark period of her life during an emotional conversation with Maria (Samia Longchambon).
This week, Maria attempted to return to work after having time off to keep an eye on Liam (Charlie Wrenshall), who googled how to end his life during the storyline that saw him bullied by Mason (Luca Toolan) and Dylan (Liam McCheyne).
Maria was terrified about letting Liam out of her sight, and decided to install a video camera in the flat to watch him.
However, when Liam went off into the bathroom, a panicked Maria dashed out of the salon.
When Maria returned to her work tonight to apologise to Audrey, it wasn’t long until she was in tears, overwhelmed with everything.
Audrey sent David (Jack P Shepherd) on his way, sat Maria down, and got her to talk.
Maria told Audrey everything about Liam’s struggles and how she constantly worries about what he’ll do next. She said Roman Kemp’s recent mental health documentary allowed her to learn about the statistics surrounding male suicide vs female, and how children tend to act in the present moment without thinking about the future.
Audrey opened up about her overdose to make Maria feel less alone. She hated the thought of her friend’s nerves being through the roof, but Maria then had something heart-breaking to say.
She admitted that if her child is ‘in hell’, so is she, which means until Liam starts to feel better and recovers, Maria’s anxiety and the exhaustion she feels isn’t going to ease.
