Carla lies to save struggling Roy in Coronation Street – but someone else pays the price
Carla Barlow (Alison King) has had to make a bold decision to pervert the course of justice in a bid to save Coronation Street legend Roy Cropper (David Neilson) from spending the rest of his years behind bars.
Roy, who has been a firm fixture of the ITV soap for almost thirty years, has been charged with the apparent murder of troubled teen Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton).
She was last seen in February and a string of evidence has convinced detectives that the café owner is responsible for her disappearance.
After being targeted by cruel online trolls and far-right extremists, an altercation with one bully pretending to be Lauren’s mum proved a step too far and during an altercation, she fell to the floor and hit her head.
DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) called him in for questioning, and earlier this week he was refused bail and sent down.
Solicitor Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) urged his family to head straight home to take a phone call from him, as it was likely that technophobe Roy would only know his business landline number to reach out to them.
As Nina raced across the cobbles to answer the phone, it proved too late, and Carla told her nephew Bobby that he’d been locked up with no opportunity for bail.
With an immense sense of guilt for being suspicious of Roy from the outset, he headed to the police station and met with Swain to tell her that he wanted to change his statement.
Telling her that he was threatened by a masked intruder on the day Lauren went missing, she struggled to believe the story.
After confessing to Carla what he’d told the police, she fumed at Bobby for lying and potentially implicating both of them for perverting the course of justice.
But it was all in good spirit – he hoped that they would continue to search for the real culprit in Lauren’s disappearance.
However, things took a worrying turn in tonight’s (17th April) episode when Swain questioned him again on the consequences of his words.
Back at the café, he explained to Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) and Cassie (Claire Sweeney) that the fake ‘intruder’ was wearing a dark parka style coat and they headed to the precinct after remembering a similar one had been donated to the charity shop.
Whilst the coat was long gone, they did find a children’s jumper with a name written inside… belonging to Bertie Osbourne.
The women reported the coincidence to the police and they immediately brought Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) in for questioning.
He was left flabbergasted by their suggestions there was more to his relationship with Lauren that initially met the eye, and also brought up his past with Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) and current girlfriend Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon).
Meanwhile, Nina (Mollie Gallagher) went to visit her uncle Roy in prison but he refused to leave his cell to meet her.
Back at the Streetcars flat, Carla was scorning Bobby for actions now that Daniel was implicated, when she heard of Roy cutting himself off from his family.
Egged on by the his destructive behaviour, she decided to go ahead and go along with her nephew’s lies.
What impact will this have on Daniel?
