Coronation Street Calum Lill’s three-word reaction as Joel Deering’s killer revealed
Coronation Street's Calum Lill has spoken out about his character Joel Deering's death and who killed him, and he says that it is "what he deserves" after grooming and abusing Lauren Bolton
Corrie star Calum Lill has broken his silence after discovering who murdered his character, Joel Deering in a plot twist.
The actor catapulted into the spotlight taking on the role of solicitor Joel, first appearing in 2023. Initially arriving as a charmer and wooing Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown), it wasn’t long before his murky past unravelled.
In a bombshell story arc, Joel was exposed for having a sinister history of grooming and abusing young girls, including Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) – whom he tried to off, leading her to flee and vanish for months.
Joel’s wicked deeds were later blown wide open – with September seeing his corpse fished out of a local river but an autopsy report indicated he died before taking the watery plunge, sparking an edge-of-your-seat “whodunnit”.
With the finger pointed at several Weatherfield locals in recent weeks, including Dee-Dee and Carla Connor (Alison King), the killer’s identity came to light in Friday’s episode (November 15), reports Plymouth Live.
A jaw-dropping flashback episode pinned it – it was Lauren with blood on her hands. His body got chucked into the river only to be stumbled upon by the police.
Calum, in an exclusive chat with Reach and other press, has finally spoken up about his dramatic departure and the rollercoaster of emotions when he learned that Lauren was the one doling out Joel’s deserved fate.
When quizzed about when he discovered who was behind Joel’s demise, Calum revealed: “At first, we were all really confused and trying to work out what was going on because we were getting snippets of this and snippets of that.”
He then disclosed that the killer’s identity was a mystery until shortly before filming: “And I eventually found out maybe a couple of months before shooting it that it was going to Lauren. But also that it was going to be so many twists and turns along the way.”
Calum shared his reaction to finding out Lauren was the culprit, saying with a hint of irony: “When I found out it was Lauren I thought soap justice is definitely a thing, and I think that’s the best justice he could have got.”
Reflecting on Joel’s fate, Calum remarked: “He attacked her viscously and nearly killed her, so for it to be able to come full circle, and for him to get his comeuppance from the person he attacked when she was vulnerable and defenceless I think, is what he deserves.”
