Ken Barlow (William Roache) was furious to see Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) disrespect his late wife Deirdre’s (Anne Kirkbride) memory in Coronation Street.

The soap legend, who has been a firm fixture on the cobbles ever since the first episode 64 years ago, has had a rough time of late since suffering a fall.

As much as he hated to admit defeat, he eventually agreed with his family, and following advice from medical professionals that he would need a carer to help him out around the house for the foreseeable.

Concerned family Steve (Simon Gregson), Amy (Elle Mulvaney) and Daniel (Rob Mallard) were wondering how he would be able to afford to set up a care plan, especially since he was so reluctant to rely on them all.

Amy even considered digging into her inheritance from grandma Deirdre, but Ken was aghast at the idea.

Listening in on the conversation was neighbour Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney), who offered to chip in and help Ken out despite not having any professional qualifications. However, she had cared for an ex-boyfriend and thought she would be perfect for the job.

In tonight’s (19th June) episode, she set away doing some jobs at No.1 when she began searching for Ken’s medication in the sideboard – and discovered Deirdre’s iconic large-framed glasses.

As long-term fans will know, the spectacles were a key part of her costume during the five decades she was on the show and she sported a number of styles.

Cassie was quick to pop them on and make a sarcastic comment about them being straight out of the 80s, something which horrified Ken.

Believing her to be disrespectful of his late wife’s memory, and furious that she wasn’t a real carer, he ordered her to leave and sacked her.

Later, after learning what had gone on, Steve tried to butter his father-in-law up, but he was having none of it, adamant that he could cope on his own. But that wasn’t the case – once alone, he was struggling to stand up unassisted.

Cassie arrived to apologise and the two seemed to hit it off after their earlier misunderstanding. He was given food for thought when she explained her past responsibilities with her ex, and he was more than happy to give her a second chance.

Something tells us this might not go exactly to plan…
