Coronation Street Clayton’s sinister past revealed as Kylie’s killer returns
Coronation Street's Clayton Hibbs, who is the son of Shona Platt, hasn't been seen on screen for years but his mum Shona Platt gets an unsettling visit this week
Coronation Street’s Shona Platt (Julia Golding) is visited by the police who inform her that her son Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison) is in hospital this week.
David Platt (Jack P Shepherd), Shona’s husband, had recently received an email from Weatherfield Prison Services and was seen reaching for a letter when Shona walked in.
In future episodes, David shares with Nick Tilsley, Ben Price’s character, about the visiting order he received from Clayton. Nick suggests that David should be honest with Shona as she will eventually find out, prompting David to devise a plan.
David later pays a visit to Clayton in prison, but will he disclose this to Shona? Later in the week, David discovers his wife in a distressed state as she reveals that the police visited her and informed her about Clayton’s hospitalisation.
Fans of the ITV soap will know Clayton and his step-brother Macca were introduced to the soap as friends of villains Callum Logan and Gemma Winter back in 2016.
After discovering Callum’s body under Kylie Platt’s house, played by Paula Lane, Clayton and Macca confronted her, oblivious to the fact that she had killed Callum months before in self-defence, reports Lancs Live.
Subsequently, the duo started to harass Gemma at her workplace, convincing her to accept fake notes from them when they purchased food from the kebab shop where she worked. However, things took a tragic turn when Clayton assaulted Gemma during a fight, causing David’s wife Kylie to intervene, only for him to stab and kill her.
Following his arrest, it was subsequently disclosed that Shona, who first appeared in December 2016, was Clayton’s mother. She encountered David in a pub and only later discovered that his deceased wife Kylie was the woman her son had murdered, with David eventually uncovering her ‘true’ identity.
Clayton was later convicted of murder and received a sentence ranging from fifteen years to life. In 2019, the plot took a dark twist when Clayton reached out to his mother via a contraband phone, informing her that the only way to stop his tormentors was for her to sneak drugs into the prison. The drug dealers involved didn’t hesitate, breaking into No.8 while the residents were sleeping and leaving a video of their intrusion for Shona, indicating they could target her and her family at any time to pressure her into cooperation.
A few weeks on, Clayton was released from prison to attend his father Dean’s funeral where Macca and his mates, posing as funeral directors, planned to help him escape. After delivering an emotional eulogy in the church, Clayton joined the mourners at the graveside where, upon receiving a signal from Macca, the prison officers were assaulted and one of the fake undertakers used a bolt cutter to free Clayton’s handcuffs.
The lad made a swift exit after he halted Macca’s brutal attack on his mother with a spade. The following day, he reached out to his mum, pleading for her assistance as there was a bounty on his head and he requested her to drive him away from the vicinity.
She transported him to an abandoned house on Port Lane, delivering food and cash the subsequent day. However, she had also informed the police about her son’s location, asserting that the call was his idea to minimise additional time added to his sentence.
Clayton responded with rage, taking her captive with a knife and revealing the shocking truth: he was the mastermind and distributor of the drugs within the prison, with his dad smuggling them in via packets concealed up his backside. His father had tragically died when one of these packets burst open.
He issued a chilling threat to the police, stating he would murder his mother in one hour if they failed to comply with his demands. When the hour elapsed, he lunged at her with the knife, but she managed to stab him, puncturing his bowel.
He was hastily taken back to the hospital where he underwent surgery and was stabilised, prepared to be sent back to prison once fully recovered. However, his mother declared she would never see him again, having discovered the ‘true’ extent of his character after he showed no remorse for killing Kylie or causing Dane’s death. How will Shona respond to the news of Clayton being hospitalised and will she forgive David for concealing her son’s plea from her?
