Coronation Street convinced Gail Platt is dead after ‘terrifying’ credits change

Coronation Street fans were left panicking on Sunday night, after they believed a clue teased the death of soap legend Gail Platt

Coronation Street fans were left panicking on Sunday night, after they believed a clue teased the death of soap legend Gail Platt.

The soap icon faced death last week after feeling unwell, with it soon emerging Gail was suffering from a blockage in her left main coronary artery. After an operation, Gail was recovering in hospital with her loved ones fearing she might not make it.

Fans feared she would die knowing she was leaving the soap very soon. Helen Worth quit the role after 50 years earlier this year, and just days ago we saw her seemingly having a heart attack.

She was rushed to hospital where she went into a cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. Gail is doing okay now and was seen awake and talking in the latest episode, even asking new love interest Jesse Chadwick to marry her.

But a surprising moment at the end of the episode left fans “terrified”, with some reeling. A huge change to the end credits theme left many shocked and wondering what was going on.

In fact some fans believed Gail had died, and this was a clue that she had been killed off or was about to be. Others thought it might be a sign that Jesse might die, like four of Gail’s husbands.

As the credits rolled just as Gail was left thrilled by Jesse accepting her proposal, the usual theme was overlayed by the sound of a heart monitor. The famous theme music then began to fade with a sinister noise, as the monitor got louder before it sounded as though someone was flatlining.

It followed Gail’s cardiac arrest, with the soap sending a powerful message to coincide with the storyline. Gail has not died and the noise was not Gail flatlining, but it was featured in the credits to raise awareness about heart disease.

The ITV soap opera partnered with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for this, with the credits interrupted by a message to highlight the charity’s research into prevention, diagnosis and treatment for heart and circulatory diseases. It was voiced by BHF ambassador and former Coronation Street actor Kimberly Hart-Simpson, who played Nicky Wheatley in the soap.

It’s not entirely clear how Gail will leave the soap, but we can confirm the credit change did not signal her death and Gail will be back onscreen. Taking to X, one panicked fan said: “HAVE THEY JUST KILLED GAIL OFF?”

Another said: “The weirdest advert shoehorned into the credits it nearly gave me a heart attack.” A third fan said: “The heart beat almost gave me a heart attack then, I thought Gail had been killed off through the credits,” as a fourth wrote: “I thought Gail flatlined and that was them telling us she won’t be in it again.”
