Coronation Street fans stunned over Carla star’s real accent and say ‘I had no idea’
Coronation Street star Alison King plays Carla Connor in the ITV soap, but she has a different accent to her on-screen persona
Coronation Street viewers have been left stunned after discovering Alison King’s authentic voice for the first time, with many confessing they had “no idea” about her real accent.
The 52 year old actress, who hails from Leicester, adopts a Mancunian twang for her role as Carla Connor on the cobbles, but her genuine accent is worlds apart from her on-screen persona.
A resurfaced video of Alison discussing her character has sent fans into a frenzy on social media, with one writing on X: “the fact ali speaks with an accent when playing carla makes her so much more attractive imo.. not to mention impressive!”.
Another viewer responded: “I actually had no idea she was using a different accent than her irl one! Love this!”, whilst a third chimed in: “The consummate professional” and someone else noted: “My accent is the same as Carla’s!”.
The revelation comes at a thrilling moment for soap enthusiasts, as Carla gears up to pop the question to her girlfriend DS Lisa Swain in upcoming episodes this week, reports Leicestershire Live.
The pair, lovingly dubbed “Swarla” by devoted fans, have been romantically linked since last year.
Earlier in 2025, Lisa floated the idea of getting engaged, but Carla politely turned down the proposal.
Carla explained that whilst she was keen to tie the knot, the timing felt inappropriate following the tragic murder of Lisa’s colleague, PC Craig Tinker, who was killed whilst on duty.
Lisa has been battling emotional turmoil since Craig’s death, as it has triggered painful memories of losing her late wife Becky, who also perished whilst serving as a police officer. The character was left in turmoil after uncovering that her late wife had been under investigation for corruption before her death, a secret she has been withholding from their daughter Betsy.
After standing by Lisa during a difficult period, Carla recently shared with her nephew Ryan her plans to propose to Lisa, leaving him overjoyed at the news.
Earlier this week, Carla was seen checking the post and confiding in Ryan about her anticipation for an engagement ring, leaving Lisa curious about their hushed conversations…
As the week draws to a close, Friday’s episode sees an excited Carla receiving the much-awaited engagement ring and she can’t hold back her eagerness to propose.
Later on, Carla visits the Rovers and hands the engagement ring to Glenda Shuttleworth, asking her to sneak it into Lisa’s champagne glass when she arrives… will the proposal go as planned and will Lisa accept?
