Coronation Street fans torn apart over Mason’s gory death as they rush to share despair

Coronation Street fans have admitted they were left “ugly crying” after the violent death of Mason Radcliffe on the ITV show.

Mason – played by actor Luca Toolan – died despite the efforts of paramedics and hospital staff on Monday evening’s episode, after being stabbed in the stomach. Mason had planned to move away to Germany after deciding to tell the police about his brothers’ involvement in an active case, and asked his pal Dylan Wilson to help him set off.

However, Mason’s brothers Matty and Logan were not behind bars as he’d hoped, and chased him and Dylan. In a sad twist, Dylan had secretly brought a zombie knife with him to protect them and in the end, it was used by one of Mason’s brothers, with Mason ultimately succumbing to his injuries in hospital.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, fans shared that – despite originally disliking the rough-around-the-edges character of Mason – they’d been won over by his growth and were gutted to see him go. “Didn’t think I’d be ugly crying for Mason but here I am,” one person wrote.

“I hate how the writers do this. Giving a character like Mason a decent redemption arc with background development and then he gets stabbed… So devastating!!!!!” said a second, with a third agreeing: “Proper gutted they’ve killed him off. A fantastic young actor without doubt, top job from a true talent.”

The soap’s official Instagram page also shared a video of Luca saying goodbye to fans, eliciting more laments for his loss from Corrie among plenty of well wishes for his future. “We wish Luca all the best as he says goodbye to Mason,” the clip was captioned.

“Hiya. I’ve just finished my last scene, as you can see here,” Luca said in the beginning of the video, pointing to the gruesome blood makeup on his face. “It’s a weird feeling, it’s a really weird feeling. But I just wanted to say to you guys, everybody watching, thank you. Because without every single one of you watching, we wouldn’t have any of this, you know. You’ve made a little lad’s dream come true. And I’m just – I’m grateful, I’m very grateful. A year and a half has just flown by, and it feels weird coming to a close.

The actor continued: “But I’m just full of pride and joy and gratitude for your support. So, thank you. Over and out, last of Mason, whether you loved him or you hated him, this is me gone. So enjoy the peace on your screens – well, probably not, because it’s Corrie!”

In response, one fan wrote: “A very tearful farewell to Mason. I’m sure we will see great things in the future for Luca. He is going to be a fine actor well done @itvcorrie for highlighting the awful knife crime that takes innocent lives.”

Another shared: “This is sad… after Mason turning his life around & being a good example to all the bullies out there. That they can turn life around for the better. This storyline is one of the best apart from bringing the gloom into it. Wanted your character to continue. Sad to see you go.”
