Coronation Street fans spotted a blunder

Coronation Street fans were left unimpressed by an apparent blunder as it was finally revealed who started the fire at the Platts’ home.

Viewers watched on as it was confirmed it was Max who started the huge blaze. CCTV from the garage showed him stealing the petrol. He was spotted thanks to a distinctive hoodie, which a horrified Shona instantly recognised – it was the same one she had bought her stepson at Christmas. She quickly rushed off to the hospital, where Max was still recovering after getting trapped in the fire last week, and confronted him about the incident.

Max had realised his secret was out as Shona revealed his blunder in getting caught on camera. However, viewers online were quick to question the moment, too. One user on Twitter/X wrote: “He poured petrol over his gloved hand. It would have burst into flames when he struck the match. #Corrie.”

Another agreed, saying: “Exactly what we said, insults our intelligence,” while another joked: “How dare you question these poor stupid writers.”

In shocking scenes in the long-running ITV soap, Shona, David and the kids were left with nothing after a fire broke out in the Platts’ home, with a lit rag being thrown into the house. Many had initially suspected Harvey Gaskell was to blame for what happened, given that David owed him money. However, with the truth now out, some viewers were stunned by the big reveal.

Max has now pointed out his motive behind starting the blaze. He said David had openly discussed the possibility of burning the house down in an attempt at an insurance scam. He told Shona: “I heard David going on about burning the house down – joking, but it stuck. The insurance will get us out of this.”

A rattled Shona, however, pointed out the chaos he had caused. As David was being quizzed by police about whether he has any enemies, Max went on: “That is exactly why I did it – to get Harvey, to get the Radcliffes off our back.”

Last month, Paddy Bever, who plays Max revealed his decision to leave the soap. He said at the time he had already filmed his final scenes. He told Digital Spy: “After much reflection and in an incredibly difficult decision, I have chosen to step away from Max and Coronation Street to explore new opportunities. I have been surrounded by such kindness and support every step of the way.”
