Coronation Street legend clarifies future after lengthy absence from soap

Coronation Street legend Sue Cleaver is set to return to her Eileen Grimshaw role next month after months of taking on a very different role!

Eileen was last seen on our screens in April, before jetting off to Thailand after getting some horrifying news about son Jason (Ryan Thomas). Her dear, eldest son had been injured in a motorbike accident.

We’ve heard very little about her since – though last week she called boyfriend George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) to ask if he could transfer her some money to pay for his hospital treatment.

During her absence she’s missed out on a huge family affair between George and sister Glenda (Jodie Prenger), who found out that their late dad Archie had left the lucrative funeral business to them both – meaning she’d missed out on years of cashing in!

There’s going to be a lot of catching up to do…

Off-screen, Sue has been staring in the nationwide tour of Sister Act: The Musical, in the role of Mother Superior. The production ends in October, but she’s already handed over her habit to former co-star Wendi Peters.

Speaking in a recent interview, she said: ‘I’ve finished Sister Act but I’m missing everybody hugely. I had the most wonderful time doing that show – I hadn’t been on stage for 30 years.

‘I just thought “I’m going to embrace this, I’m going to do it”. Even though I was scared and even though it was the unknown, I thought “nope, this is fabulous. Let’s just go for this” and I did.’

She added to OK! Magazine: ‘I had the most amazing time. We played to full houses everywhere and had standing ovations. I will miss everybody hugely but you’ve got to finish one thing to start the next thing.’

Sue has also teased a return to the stage in the future.

‘I definitely think I’ll do more on stage. The stage is where I started. Theatre’s always been my first love. Now I’ve been back, that’s not going to be my last.

‘But I’ll be heading back to Coronation Street soon. I’m having a little holiday and then I will be heading back into Corrie in July so they can see me back there. I will be back.’

As the soap films 6-8 weeks in advance, it could be a little while longer before we see Eileen walking down those famous cobbles again.
