Coronation Street fans are speculating about a potential return of a soap legend in a significant twist involving Roy Cropper.

The much-loved character Roy, portrayed by David Neilson, first appeared on our screens in 1995 as Deirdre Barlow’s (Anne Kirkbride) neighbour in a block of flats. He quickly became a fan favourite.

Throughout his 30-year tenure on the enduring soap, the café owner has been central to numerous pivotal storylines.

Most memorable was his marriage to Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh). The couple, who came together in the late nineties, became one of television’s most cherished and enduring pairs.

Roy and Hayley, who never had children of their own, remained united until Hayley’s heartbreaking death in 2014 following a diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, reports Leicestershire Live.

Roy is also recognised for his nurturing nature, having taken several troubled young people under his wing over the years, including niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) and former resident Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly).

Now, fans are predicting that a past soap legend could be making a dramatic return to the show.

Recently, David Neilson, who plays Roy, received the Outstanding Achievement award at the 2025 British Soap Awards. Prior to accepting his award, presented by Julie Hesmondhalgh, several co-stars recorded video messages praising David, including Katherine Kelly.

In her video tribute, she lauded: “You’re one of the finest actors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with, and more importantly you are also one of the best human beings I know.”

Post Katherine’s heartfelt VT shoutout to David, soap buffs are abuzz with speculation about her possible return to the Street.

Over on a Coronation Street Facebook fan group, one user got teary posting: “Katherine’s appearance on the VT for David got me emotional!”.

Another fan piped up, speculating: “I thought for ages that they would bring her back, it would be fantastic to see her and David on screen again.”

Someone chipped in with a theory: “Maybe it’s a clue and she is returning…” Another comrade was all for the idea, demanding: “Yeah get Becky back!”.

Becky’s unforgettable debut on the cobbles dates back to 2006. As a rough-around-the-edges ex-con, Becky found solace with Roy and Hayley.

Her role was pivotal, featuring momentous events – from tying the knot with Steve McDonald (played by Simon Gregson) to enduring two devastating miscarriages, coupled with her yearning to adopt.

However, in 2012, Katherine’s departure left fans crestfallen as she bade farewell to the soap after a tremulous love saga and nuptials with Steve, with Becky jetting off to start afresh in Barbados.
