Coronation Street legend’s future in doubt after 29 years following shock arrest
Coronation Street legend Roy Cropper could be set to leave the cobbles for good.
The beloved soap character, played by David Neilson, has been on the soap since 1995. And it’s fair to say he’s become a cobbles legend.
However, over in the soap at the moment, he has found himself involved in a harrowing storyline. Fans will recall that troubled youngster Lauren (Cait Fitton) went missing last month – with Roy being the last known person to see her alive.
And it didn’t take long for Roy to become DS Lisa Swain’s number one suspect. Suspicions started to arise after he deep cleaned Lauren’s flat after she disappeared.
But Blood was found at her flat, and Roy’s suspicious behaviour led to him being questioned. And in a big twist, the search for Lauren became a murder inquiry and Roy was hit with trolls and speculation from online sleuths.
And in Friday’s episode (April 12), Roy is taken in again for questioning about the incident and is interrogated while solicitor Dee Dee is by his side. But as Swain dives into Roy’s chequered past, it’s evident she sees him as the man responsible.
Now, with an arrest on the cards for the beloved character, it’s been claimed that Roy could be leaving the soap for good. Daily Star has quizzed one of the world’s most popular artificially intelligent “creative” tools Gemini, to see if Roy could leave the soap.
The program responded: “Roy Cropper’s arrest for Lauren’s murder in Coronation Street certainly throws his future on the cobbles into question.” It then noted how his exit could happen for a “few reasons.”
Gemini said it could take place for “dramatic impact”. It explained: “A permanent exit after such a dramatic storyline could be a fitting farewell for the long-standing character, played by David Neilson since 1995.”
Another reason could be “storytelling opportunities.” The system explained: “Roy’s trial and potential imprisonment could be a dark and heavy storyline.”
The AI program also listed “exit with impact” as a third reason for Roy leaving. It said: “If Roy is written out, a murder trial and its aftermath would provide a significant exit storyline. It would leave a lasting impact on the show and characters involved.”
