Coronation Street Platts to be rocked by ‘heartbreak’ in Gail Platt loss

While details of Gail's exit from Corrie have yet to be revealed, Julia Goulding has teased some troubled times ahead for the soap veteran's family - could death be on the cards?

Gail Platt is due for an emotional exit in upcoming weeks

Amid theories that Gail Platt could be killed off ahead of her exit from Coronation Street, actress Julia Goulding has given a crucial clue death could be in the works.

Soap veteran Helen Worth was tipped to be leaving the ITV soap in June, 2024, and the 73-year-old actress later confirmed her time on the cobbles was coming to an end, after five decades of portraying Gail Platt.

But ahead of her swan song, numerous fans of the Manchester-based drama have feared the worst for Gail, speculating she may wave a permanent goodbye to Weatherfield.

Speaking about how Gail’s on-screen family will react to her departure, Shona Platt star Julia hinted at the possibility of heartbreak for the clan, as she admitted the Platts will struggle in the aftermath of the matriarch’s exit.

When asked about how the Platts will overcome Gail’s exit, Julia frankly said: “I think in the immediate future not massively well! The Platts are such a strong family it’s heartbreaking we’re losing our matriarch.” Could the heartbreak and “loss” she mentioned be a nod to Gail’s upcoming death?

While this remains to be seen, Julia added: “But they’re strong enough to get through it together, it’s a new chapter and an uncertain time for the Platts, but Gail has cemented such a good foundation for the family they can only survive it.”

After filming her last scenes on Coronation Street in late October, 2024, Helen Worth recently celebrated the end of reign on Coronation Street at a backstage bash with her co-stars, as her TV son Jack P Shepherd, recalled during an episode of his podcast On The Sofa, which he hosts with Corrie co-stars Colson Smith and Ben Price. He also explained that Helen paid tribute to her character’s five ex-husbands with a T-shirt including all of their names.

“I thought that was a nice touch, that was quite amusing”, Jack said, “Then she gave a little speech and thanked everybody and said what a marvellous time she’d had and she’s going to miss everybody — there were lots of tears. She didn’t want a fanfare. So we kind of convinced her to do something because it was for everybody.”

Helen confirmed she would be leaving Corrie and revealed what had pushed her to make the decision in a statement: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.”

“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
