As reality hits that his speech his deteriorating, Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) in Coronation Street accepts it will soon be time to use a device that can speak on his behalf.

Paul, who has motor neurone disease, has known for a while that his illness will eventually take over his body completely.

It prompted him to start researching assisted suicide, with the beloved character then telling husband Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) he wants to end his life when the time comes because he hates the thought of him being a ‘hostage inside his own body’.

Despite his own views, Billy eventually told Paul that he would help him end his life when the time comes, not wanting his beloved husband to suffer against his will.

Coming up, Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) and Paul head to another speech therapy meeting and learn that Paul’s speech and ability to eat solid food have now deteriorated.

After being told it might be best to start using a feeding tube, Paul and Bernie return to the flat and break the news he can no longer eat properly for fear of choking.

Paul assures Billy and Summer (Harriet Bibby) that if they liquidise his food, he’ll be fine.

As the family sit down to Billy’s roast dinner, Paul sets about eating a bowl of pureed food instead.

Afterwards, as Billy, Summer, Bernie and Todd clear away the plates, Paul is left fighting back the tears, another devastating reminder that the motor neurone disease is taking over his entire body, and he can’t do anything about it.

Later in the week, Paul and Billy pop by the pub to retrieve Paul’s laptop but, due to the burglary that happens the evening prior, they soon discover the device was stolen by the masked men.

Back at the flat, Paul plays back some of his other pre-recorded messages. Billy is moved by them, but can’t help feel they still need some work.

But can they get things sorted in time before the inevitable happens and Paul becomes reliant on it?
