Coronation Street star Carole Royle reveals music boss husband's cause of death

Coronation Street actress Carole Royle has confirmed her husband Julian Spears’ cause of death, after she announced he died in a freak swimming pool accident.

The music exec – who was instrumental in the success of The Boomtown Rats and The Stranglers – was 74 when he passed away on December 9. Carole, 70, posted on Facebook about his passing on Monday, saying he was a “perfectly fit man”, but developed a “sudden massive brain haemorrhage” after jumping in to a usually heated pool.

It’s now been revealed he was at his local David Lloyd gym in West London, taking a dip after writing and stamping Christmas cards to his family and friends. He’d made himself lunch and had gone swimming, like had three or four times a week for the last four years.

Carole said he had told her he’d jumped into the pool after recalling seeing steam rising from it, as it was usually heated. But the pool was much colder than usual, which lead to a haemorrhage in a part of the brain that is inoperable, with him passing away the following day, on Monday.

Writing on Monday, Carole posted that she was “desperately sorry” to announce the news of the music PR boss for Phonogram, who collapsed at their home in Twickenham. He shouted to his wife for help, and he was taken by ambulance to the West Middlesex hospital on Sunday.

The Mail reports that Carole said the pair were “childhood sweethearts”, adding that they met aged 14, before reuniting in 1977, having been together since. She said alongside his swimming, he was a “keen jogger” who would walk after eating.

She explained that he was “unbelievably passionate” when it came to music, but although he had many successes in the industry, he would “never” brag, and was “very humble”. She revealed he also worked with Barry White and Sheryl Crow, adding how much of a shame it is that he’s “not around to hear” people paying tribute to him.

Carole said that Christmas would be especially hard this year, saying: “The Christmas cards we were about to send to friends and relatives abroad are still in the same place on his desk untouched from Sunday.” She said of the accident: “The pool was always heated. It was never cold on any of the other occasions he’d used it. And on Sunday he recalled seeing steam rising from the water so assumed it was heated as normal. But he jumped in and the water was freezing cold.”

She added that although he was “shaken” he got out and drove home safely, saying that she didn’t know how “prominent” warning signs were about the pool being unheated, adding that nobody at reception told Julian it was cold that day. He had complained of “feeling poorly” and losing his balance, saying the room was spinning.

Carole ended the devastating statement: “He completed me. One hundred per cent. He was kind, genuine, generous and lived life to the full.”
