Coronation Street star likens show to a ‘cult’ and slams Sean Wilson and Bruce Jones’ exits
A former star of Coronation Street hit out at the soap for being like a 'cult' as she slammed the treatment of former co-stars Sean Wilson and Bruce Jones
A former Coronation Street actress has hit out at the show following the exits of much-loved star’s Sean Wilson and Bruce Jones.
Vicky Entwistle, who starred as Janice Battersby on the ITV soap, has criticised the show’s decision to let go of Sean, who plays Martin Platt, and her on-screen lover Bruce, who played Les Battersby. She took to Twitter /X to share her fume, writing: “I’m so angry at the way @Brucejonesnew @SeanWilsonChef have been treated! It will all come out! I keep my own council now. I’m no longer scared! The measures that company took to control us all was like a sect. It was scary!”
She then claims: “Every one thinks it’s a soap opera but actually it’s a tightly gripped cult!!! My Husband begged me to leave 2 years before. He hated the controlling environment. When I finally left we cried. The freedom was electric.” Fans quickly commented on the outburst, with one claiming it was “so so sad to hear” her comments.

The 56-year-old actress’ comments come after an unfounded historical sex complaint emerged against Sean prior to his proposed return to the cobbles. He had played the role of Martin Platt in the soap from 1985 to 2005 before briefly returning in 2018. He was also due to return to the famous street and was filming scenes earlier this year. However, his return was ruined when an unfounded historical sex complaint emerged alleged to have happened in 1997.
Recently, Sean learned there would be no further action taken by police, and that charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence, but he has since revealed social media users likened him to infamous sex offenders – leaving him worried about going out in public.
In October, Bruce also revealed his fury over ITV’s email confirming his character will be killed off. Bruce was previously interviewed by undercover journalist ‘Fake Sheikh’ Mazher Mahmood, and while under the influence of alcohol, he began revealing upcoming storylines on the soap, leading to a showdown with ITV bosses. Shortly after, he was written out of storylines, and while Bruce insisted it was a mutual decision for him to leave, the beloved character never returned to the cobbles.
In a chat with GB News in October, he admitted he was furious to read that Les would die off-screen, and took aim at the show as he claimed it had “no storylines” anymore. He said: “I got an email from the casting office saying, Dear Mr Jones, I am sorry to inform you Les Battersby will die in the next few months.
“I read the email and thought, why send me an email like that? Why call me Mr. Jones? Why not call me Bruce? That annoyed me a little bit, but then I felt relieved. Maybe it’s time for me to go now,”
He went on to say he had since had an apology from the press office.
