Coronation Street star Alex Bain has thanked fans and his agent ahead of his exit from the ITV soap, after playing the role of Simon Barlow for 16 years.

The actor, who joined the show when he was just seven years old, took to Instagram to urge fans to keep watching to see how Simon’s storyline unfolds.

‘Make sure you’re keeping tuned in every week to see what develops,’ he wrote, alongside a clip from Sunday night’s (February 11) episode.

During the episode, things went drastically downhill for Simon when he got behind the wheel of a car drunk, and ended up crashing with young Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) in the backseat.

Horror followed when Sam later collapsed at school and had to be rushed to hospital for a brain scan. Thankfully he was fine, but Simon struggled to cope with his guilt, and instead took himself to the police station to come clean about what he’d done.

Furious at his recklessness, Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) threw Simon out of the flat, leaving him with no choice but to sleep rough.

In his Instagram story, Alex revealed how grateful he was to have been given the storyline, and thanked his agents for their support.

As Alex says, there is more drama ahead for Simon following his dramatic crash.

In upcoming scenes, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) will find Simon in Victoria Gardens, and come to the realisation that he has been there all night.

An emotional heart to heart follows, with Simon confessing to Leanne that he has been drinking too much and is turning into his dad.

Can Leanne get him the help he needs?

And with Simon having handed himself into the police, could his exit see him carted off to prison?
