As his physical condition deteriorated he considered ending his own life a couple of times and Billy has had to nurse him through severe bouts of depression.

The former vicar stayed strong for his sick husband through endless hospital visits and increasingly limited mobility, but soon viewers will see him reach his limit.

In an episode of Coronation Street airing next Tuesday, Billy tries to make Valentine’s Day special for Paul by arranging a motorbike ride for him.

His husband is excited by the adventure and agrees to go celebrate at the Bistro bar after taking some painkillers.

There Billy goes on to surprise Paul with a Barbershop Quartet.

Paul is delighted by the gesture and the pair share a sweet moment before it is rudely interrupted by some old pals on a stag do.

One of Paul’s old friends from school, Benno, drunkenly stumbles over to the couple and attempts to get his sickly mate out of his wheelchair to dance.

It all proves too much for Billy, who was determined to create a romantic atmosphere for his husband, and flies into a fury when he sees it ruined.

In a shock moment the usually peaceful man ends up getting physical and punching Benno.

How will Paul take this uncharacteristic display of violence?
