Coronation Street’s Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) makes a life-changing decision regarding her daughter Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) next week.

As fans of the ITV soap know, Cassie has seen her nearest and dearest turn their back on her in recent weeks after Ken Barlow (William Roache) discovered she had been drugging him.

With nowhere to stay and no money to her name, she started sleeping rough earlier this week, and tonight’s episode will see former addict Cassie tempted by drugs again when Ken’s daughter Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) seeks revenge.

Cassie’s mum Evelyn is currently back in Weatherfield for her birthday, having recently departed to study for a university law course,

Having reunited with Cassie’s son Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and his wife Fiz (Jennie McAlpine), Evelyn explains that she feels compelled to help her daughter.

But things are getting even more desperate for Cassie, who is later seen calling a dealer to get a fix after spending the night in the ginnel.

When she then goes to meet the dealer in the precinct, she’s caught red-handed by Evelyn’s good friend Roy Cropper (David Neilson), who threatens to call the police.

Evelyn then takes decisive action – she says she will give up her studies to look after Cassie and get her back on her feet.

But will Evelyn really have to give up on her dreams?

What we do know is that actress Maureen Lipman, who plays Evelyn, will continue to dip in and out of Coronation Street for the foreseeable, having recently changed the way she works on the soap.

Claire Sweeney recently told Metro of her on-screen mother’s new way of working: ‘Whenever she goes, we had a few drinks with her the other day and we were like: “You’ll be back, we’ll see you soon.”

‘She goes off to do a play or whatever she’s doing but hopefully she’ll be back.’
