As Gemma and Chesney's money troubles worsen the doting mum thought breaking the law was her only option as she struggled to afford trainers for her daughter Carys
Coronation Street viewers felt ‘sad’ during Monday’s episode (June 24) as Gemma Winter-Brown was forced to take drastic action as her money troubles spiraled.
Gemma and her husband Chesney often struggle to make ends meet for their five children. While Chesney has a son Joseph from a previous relationship, the couple also have quads together, meaning they have a large brood to feed, clothe, and entertain.
Despite both working hard the couple’s cash flow is very tight and during the latest trip to Weatherfield, Gemma’s day went bad to worse when one of her kids needed a pair of new shoes.

Still reeling from the £70 parking fine she received in the post, Gemma squished Carys’s feet into a pair of shoes that were two sizes too small.
After she got a call from the tot’s teacher, Gemma had to buy her a new pair and headed to the shoe shop to get her feet measured.
But when she learns the shoes are £45, Gemma is gutted as she looks around at other parents purchasing their kid’s shoes without a care in the world.
While the assistant is distracted, Gemma grabs Carys’s hand and they flee the shop without paying.

Bernie Winter then called around to see her daughter Gemma and noticed the fresh shoes on her granddaughter’s feet. Gemma felt like a complete failure as she confessed to walking out of the shop without paying as she only had £20 to last her the week, and couldn’t afford the shoes.
Corrie fans were left rushing to social media to sympathise with Gemma, as one viewer wrote on X: “Watching tonight’s coronation street. I feel so sorry for Chesney and Gemma. #Corrie.” A second stated: “Aw Bernie trying to comfort Gemma. Love Dolly Rose Campbell and Jane Hazlegrove together. Amazing actresses.”
A third chimed in with: “Give Gemma and Chesney a storyline where they win the lottery or something please #CoronationStreet #Corrie”.
“Why is everyone being so mean about Gemma & Ches having no money for basics is commonplace across the country right now, cost of living etc & it’s not like they smoke, drink or on the lash at weekends or she’s got a face full of filler!! Just a regular family struggling #corrie”, added another.
