Coronation Street icon Roy Cropper (David Neilson) has fallen victim to vile trolls after becoming prime suspect in the disappearance of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton).

The café owner was implicated for her murder after accidentally disposing of vital evidence whilst cleaning up the flat which had been sublet to her by Roy’s bestie Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman).

He’d also recently fired her from her job and ended up being the last person to see her alive when he called round to drop off her wages.

Suspicions ran high with DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), who brought him in for questioning and wondered why he’d been so willing to see her succeed in life when he barely knew her.

Roy being Roy, he answered in his own unique mannerisms which gave her more reason to suspect him.

After being arrested, the footage of him getting into the police car was shared across social media and it wasn’t long before Lauren’s terrorist dad Reece (Scott Anson) called in his heavies to push Roy about.

In tonight’s (20th March) episode, he learnt that some super sleuths had been digging up a bat conservation site that he frequented in the hope of gathering some evidence on the missing girl.

Concerned for the animals’ welfare, Roy was accompanied to the location with his niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) to smooth down the ground and ensure no damage had been done.

Upon his return, Swain caught him holding the spade and ordered him down to the police station for further interrogation and to discuss text messages that had been uncovered between him and Lauren.

Headstrong and adamant that he had nothing to hide, Roy made a grave mistake and attended the vigil held at the precinct to remember her.

Speaking about what a beautiful and special person she was, vile onlookers began to record him and brand him a ‘perv’ and ‘creepy Cropper’.

Despite protests from Evelyn, Nina and Carla Connor (Alison King) to leave, he was insistent that he stayed – though solicitor Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) managed to convince him.

Back at Roy’s Rolls, Nina broke down in tears at the thought of her uncle being imprisoned for a crime he clearly hasn’t committed.

As Carla comforted her, a brick came flying through the glass of the door, with those responsible darting off.

When the night drew to a close, Nina opened her phone to discover someone had manipulated the footage from the vigil to twist Roy’s words and make him seem like a predator.
