Coronation Street’s Sean Wilson breaks silence after axe with five-word statement
Sean Wilson has broken his silence after being axed by Coronation Street.
The Martin Platt actor was set for a return to the cobbles after his brief comeback in 2018 to bid farewell to his son David before he jetted off to New Zealand. But a permanent reunion with his wife Gail is off the cards after his departure due to “personal reasons”. Sean’s former co-stars are thought to have been “kept in the dark” about the whole ordeal, but now insiders say there’s more to the 59-year-old soap star’s exit. “What is really odd, is that they had started filming most of the scenes,” the source explained.
Now, the actor has spoken about his exit for the first time. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Sean shared a cryptic snap with his fans as he thanked them for their ongoing support. Sean shared a post of a light display, which appears to have been taken in an old barn.
The lights read: “Love.” Captioning his post, the actor-turned-chef penned: “Thanks for all the love xxx.” His upload which has been viewed over 29,000 times was soon flooded with support from his online followers. “I think pretty much everyone who liked your character is disappointed at the outcome but as long as you’re OK then that’s all that matters,” said one.

Meanwhile, a second went on to write: “Obviously disappointed to hear you won’t be returning but wishing you well Sean and you take care. We all all here for you.” “Absolutely gutted that Martin will not be coming back for Gail’s leaving story. I do hope you’re okay Sean and wish you all the very best,” wrote another.
Elsewhere, fans urged Sean and ITV to issue a statement about the decision to axe his return. “I think you or ITV should make an official statement to prevent the rumour mill you’re not helping by keeping quiet about what’s happened?” commented one. A second added: “Still seems strange why a official statement has not been released either by yourself or Corrie.”
It’s believed lawyers are now involved in his exit. Sean was said to have had a falling out with the show’s bosses, claiming they were “rude” to him after returning to the show. He recently came back to the ITV soap and apparently had a tense meeting with the team on set.
The actor was said to be disappointed about not being included in Gail’s big exit storyline and has now “instructed” lawyers after being suddenly cut from the show. It was also reported that actress Helen Worth, 73, was excited for Sean, who played Gail’s ex-husband Martin, to return to the show.
A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Never before has a departure been so sudden or secretive. He went to the boss’s office and didn’t return. It has been a huge shock to everybody. And it is so sad after all these years that he isn’t going to be in Helen’s final scenes — it is something that she really wanted to happen.” The outlet also said that “lawyers are involved”. An ITV spokesperson said: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.”
Sean recently jetted off on holiday with his long-term girlfriend Carol Hammond. “They have gone away,” a resident told MailOnline outside their home in Leicester. “It’s been a tough few weeks for Sean with all the speculation around Corrie, so I’m sure the break will do him good.”
Sean and Carol have been dating since the pandemic in 2020, documenting their relationship with selfies sharing on social media. Before Carol, he was seeing actress Susie Fenwick following his 16-year marriage to ex-wife Gaynor, which ended in 2013.
