Corrie fans reckon they’ve cracked the mystery around Betsy Swain’s recent secret bombshell – and her mum DS Lisa Swain might not be too chuffed when she hears it.
Young Betsy Swain (played by Sydney Martin) first appeared on our screens this year, showing up as the offspring of DS Lisa Swain (acted by Vicky Myers). Then, she got embroiled with twisted lawyer Joel Deering (portrayed by Calum Lill) the same bloke who preyed on Lauren Bolton (played by Cait Fitton), tried to murder their child, Frankie.
Betsy started blackmailing Joel after catching him plying her mate Sabrina (played by Luana Santos) with booze. But things took a dark turn when he lashed out and attacked her. Ultimately, Betsy grassed Joel up to her police officer mum DS Swain, seemingly teeing up his much-deserved downfall.
However, in a twist during Wednesday’s show (September 18), turns out Betsy’s hands aren’t clean as she is actually deep in Joel’s dodgy dealings. In the episode, Betsy gave a worrying nod to her crime to bestie Sabrina but kept quiet on the details, suggesting she was tangled in Joel’s nefarious activities, reports the Liverpool Echo.
She then reflected on how Lauren’s baby Frankie, who was born early because Joel had drugged Lauren, might now be suffering because of what Joel did. Towards the end of Wednesday’s drama, Betsy even popped into the hospital to see Lauren and the poorly Frankie, which left Lauren stewing over who she could be.
After saying she was “sorry” without giving the full picture, Betsy legged it, leaving a shaken Lauren trying to make sense of things. Now, viewers think they’ve cracked the secret behind Betsy’s actions on Coronation Street.
In a flurry of online speculation, diehard fans suggest Betsy isn’t as innocent as she seems and may have bought the drugs for Joel using her unsuspecting mum Lisa’s card. Corrie enthusiasts flooded a Facebook fan page with theories, with one fan asking: “What did Betsy have to do with the tablets.” Another speculated, “I’m thinking did she order them using her mum’s card?” which prompted a stunned response: “Can you imagine! FFS.”
One more viewer expressed sympathy saying: “I thought this last night as well, poor Lisa!” while another concluded: “Yup I think it was Betsy that ordered the tablets for Joel not knowing what they were for but used Lisa’s card. She was doing all sorts to get money out of him.”
