Corrie DS Swain has ‘dark’ connection to past character as fans expose DNA twist

Coronation Street has just confirmed that legendary cop character DS Swain is set to become a permanent character on the street, with her backstory set to be explored

Coronation Street fans are ecstatic after hearing that DS Lisa Swain, played by Vicky Myers, is set to be made a permanent character.

But some eagle-eyed fans are sure they’ve spotted a major DNA twist in store for her as her backstory is set to be explored in upcoming episodes. Actress Vicky teased to Daily Star and other press: “We know that she has a teenage daughter and also, I’m not entirely sure everybody knows this, but she’s gay.”

Swain is looking for love on the cobbles – and someone has already caught her eye. Vicky said: “I think for Swain she perhaps has seen somebody that’s caught her eye. But at the moment she’s far too busy with focusing on this investigation.

“She’s focusing on her career and being a single mum and juggling her home life as well to her teenage daughter. We’re only just scratching the surface with Swain and when I got the call that this was happening, it was the itch that I needed to scratch.”

Now fans have turned to X – formerly Twitter – to speculate on which residents on the cobbles Swain could already be related to. One user found a major clue in her surname, which is the same name shared by a character called Arnold Swain.

In a shock twist, Arnold was revealed to be a bigamist when he married Emily Bishop back in 1980. The swindling con-man managed to get Deirdre and Tracy thrown out of No. 3, and he went on to try and convince Emily to move to Derbyshire with him.

Emily eventually discovered Arnold was already married to a woman named Margaret, and his spiral after that was rapid. He trapped Emily in her house and tried to convince her to join him in a suicide pact, but thankfully she managed to escape and Arnold was taken to a psychiatric hospital, where he died in 1981.

Played by George Waring, it’s entirely possible that Arnold welcomed a daughter with his first wife, or even a niece from his sister Flora, which could be Lisa. One X user wrote: “She can reveal that her great uncle was Arnold Swain, the bigamist who ‘married’ Emily Bishop!”

Another social media user agreed: “Yessss! I think I really want that to happen.” Another echoed: “If Emily was still around, she could have asked, ‘Are you related to Arnold Swain, a pet shop owner?’” While a fourth fan begged: “Please don’t make her a long-lost relative of Arnold Swain!”

Emily star Eileen Derbyshire made her last Corrie appearance in 2019, and has since retired from acting. George, meanwhile, sadly passed away in 2010.
