Corrie icon breaks down in tears on ‘ruined’ wedding day after heartbreaking twist
Coronation Street stalwart Dev Alahan was left absolutely devastated on his wedding day as he discovered the truth about what had been happening behind his back
Dev Alahan was left distraught after his wedding day took a disastrous turn in Wednesday night’s episode of Coronation Street. The local entrepreneur was all set to exchange vows with Bernie Winter in the latest chapter of the ITV soap.
However, the day didn’t go as smoothly as planned when the bride-to-be arrived late and then suddenly collapsed just as they were about to recite their vows, marking the start of a series of unfortunate events. What was supposed to be a vibrant celebration at the Street’s signature restaurant quickly turned into an emergency situation as Bernie struggled for breath and had to be rushed to hospital.
It was later revealed that Bernie had suffered an allergic reaction to the lilies in her wedding bouquet, supplied by Preston’s Petals. This drama unfolded amidst news that a Coronation Street icon will be making a comeback to the cobbles after a seven-year hiatus.
In the midst of the chaos, Debbie Webster (played by Sue Devaney) decided to lighten the mood by performing the Grease hit ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’, before popping the question to her boyfriend Ronnie Bailey (portrayed by Vinta Morgan). Despite the earlier mishap, Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) eventually became Mrs Alahan number two, exchanging vows with Dev from her hospital bed before being discharged later that day.
As fans will recall, Dev, who was previously wed to the late Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati), had been left in the dark about his son Aadi (Adam Hussain) racking up £6,000 worth of debt at the shop, which he’d been entrusted with when his father stepped back several months earlier. But Dev managed to extract the truth from his son later in the episode, reports the Mirror.
Livid, Dev, who has been portrayed by Jimmi Harkishin since 1999, declared: “You are pathetic. Why did you keep all that from me? All those debts. I purposely kept my eyes and hands of the books so that you could prove yourself. And now, you are the definition of a failure. Shame on you! And you’ve brought shame on me.”
Nevertheless, Bernie was well aware of how deeply her long-lost grandson Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) had been embroiled in the mess, having orchestrated a robbery as a botched insurance fraud, and she had spent weeks attempting to conceal the truth. Earlier that day, Brody and Aadi had engaged in a heated altercation after it emerged that he had delayed her arrival at the venue whilst seeking her guidance on caring for his sisters now that both his parents are behind bars.
Following Bernie’s eavesdropping on the heated exchange between Dev and Aadi, she revealed to Dev: “Two words. Insurance scam. Aadi got Brody to stage a robbery, and when that went belly-up, I tried to help. I got you to bring the wedding forward so we could get our hands on Aunti Rani’s cash. I thought we could pay off the debt that way. ” As fans are aware, Aunty Rani (Josephine Lloyd-Welcome) was set to gift Dev and Bernie with thousands for their wedding, and Bernie planned to use most of the money to settle Aadi’s debts while keeping it a secret from her partner. Deciding it was time to come clean, she confessed to Dev: “I did the wedding on the cheap so there’d be a bit left over, otherwise, you’d be head-to-toe in Saville Row.”
In shock, Dev simply shook his head and muttered “No, no…” as he walked out of number seven.
He made his way to the now-deserted Bistro, where Bernie soon followed. She admitted: “I thought I could fix everything without you knowing, keep everything sweet between father and son. I’ve ruined our wedding, haven’t I?” Dev was close to tears as he buried his face in his hands, pleading with his new wife that the lies had to end.
She vowed this would be the case, and the couple finally shared their first dance as husband and wife.
However, just moments later, Brody confronted Aadi on the Street and warned him: “Don’t ever get in my face like that again because I won’t be held responsible for my actions. I know we’re like relatives now but stay as far away from me as possible. Laters.”
Fans will be aware that Aadi is due to leave the soap, although no departure date has been announced yet.
Could he be facing a stint behind bars, or perhaps be given the boot by his family?
The audience certainly seems to think so and they’re convinced it’s all interconnected. Speculation is rife about a sorrowful departure as he alienates those on the cobbles.
One viewer shared their thoughts online: “Aadi is out of his depth with this robbery and love life. Everything is getting on top of him,” while another speculated: “I wonder if this will be when Aadi exits the show?”.
