Corrie’s Sue Cleaver forced to have major surgery and intensive care stay after A&E dash

After undergoing an hysterotomy in 2023, Coronation Street actress Sue Cleaver suffered several health setbacks, resulting in a dash to A&E and a stay in intensive care

Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has opened up on her hysterotomy ordeal that left her in intensive care.

The 60-year-old Eileen Grimshaw star underwent the procedure in 2023, but was later dogged by unexpected “setbacks”, believing that having her womb removed the post-menopausal stage of her life would have little impact on her health. Thankfully the former I’m A Celebrity contestant has declared she is now back and “raring to go” after putting a torrid six months behind her.

Recalling her ordeal on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast, she explained: “I have [had some real ups and downs with my health]. I am better now [but] I’ve had a pretty rubbish year. It started off with a hysterectomy and kind of went downhill from then, all out of the blue, weird stuff.”

Sue, who landed her role in Weatherfield in 2000, continued: “I was poorly for a while, so I’ve been off Corrie and hardly been in it sort of six, seven months, which is really strange.”

Preparing for her return to the Street, however, Sue thanked the ITV soap’s crew for their “wonderful” show of support throughout her problematic period. Host Kate, 50, warned listeners that whilst an hysterectomy “just plummets you straight into menopause” and can “solve a lot of problems”, it can also “presents loads more”.

Sue agreed: “Yeah, I was already post-menopausal, but it has impacted in certain ways that I didn’t expect. Then I went and found myself in A&E, and then an intensive care and that kind of took over really, so it’s been a challenging six months.”

Sue's health issues resulted in dramatic weight loss

After seemingly overcoming her struggles, a rejuvenated Sue added that life is all about “getting back in the saddle and moving on”. Next, the busy star will be taking on the role of head nun Mother Superior in the UK and Ireland tour of Sister Act The Musical from March 14. She told Digital Spy of her excitement: “I’m thrilled to be stepping into the habit and joining the incredible company of Sister Act on tour. It’s been over 30 years since I’ve been on stage, but theatre has always been my first love. A chance to take on a role like this feels like heaven.”

Last year Sue was forced to hit out after scammers used images of her weight loss to promote “keto gummies”. She furiously denied she’d used the supplements and took to Instagram to slam the opportunists. “I’m really, really sad that I have to actually make this video,” she began. “But, I’ve had quite a lot of messages over the last couple of weeks asking me about… keto dummies.

“There is obviously some scam going around saying that I lost weight using keto gummies. Dummies? I dunno. Well, it’s c**p. It’s a scam. And if you’ve been taken in by it, I am so, so sorry. It’s outrageous. And I just want you to know that I would never, ever, ever advocate anything like that. I’m incensed. I’m absolutely incensed.”

She continued: “I lost some weight last year, I stopped drinking and I went in the jungle. Yes, I have lost weight this year but not from any diet. I had some women’s health issues and I lost quite a lot of weight, too much weight – I look shocking at the minute and I’m actually trying to put on weight.”
