Poor Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) has fallen at the first hurdle in the dating world in Coronation Street as pensioner father-in-law Ken Barlow (William Roache) caught the attention of a woman, and he didn’t.

Steve’s marriage to wife Tracy (Kate Ford) has drifted apart for months, and after learning of her steamy affair with his footballing hero Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn), he was left wondering what he would do next.

Meanwhile Tracy, who employed Tommy to do some painting at No. 1 in his new profession as a decorator, has also been left single following the news that he’s accepted a job in Spain.

Furious at finding out the news from a third party and not from the horse’s mouth, she charged at him in the Viaduct Bistro and asserted that their relationship is over.

Tonight’s (27th March) episode followed Steve on his first steps into the future as he tried in vain to move on.

In the café, David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) and Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) tried to give him some much needed advice when it came to the photos on his online dating profile.

Debbie suggested that he came along to the Chariot Square Hotel’s 2 for 1 cocktail night for a chance at meeting a potential suitress.

But out at the fact Ken wanted to join him, the two men headed off for a night sipping the fancy drinks.

His eyes lit up when Debbie brought two drinks over from a mystery woman, believing that she had interest in him – but it was Ken who she had her eye on instead!

Introducing herself as Elspeth (Helen Lederer), she flirted with the Street stalwart and shoved poor Steve to one side.

When the two swapped numbers, he let out a big sigh and wondered whether he’d ever be lucky in love again.

Upcoming scenes will see him briefly reconcile with Tracy, despite hiding a letter from Tommy inviting her to join him in Spain.

Despite the letter being burnt, she still finds out about the contents and decides to leave Weatherfield forever.

Will Steve have more luck on the Rovers’ upcoming speed dating night?
