Coronation Street aired a surprise exit tonight – as a fan favourite character left the Cobbles after 10 years.

Tonight, fans watched on as Alya Nazir departed the Coronation Street cobbles for a new job in Ireland. She had decided to step down from Adam’s lawyer firm, moving to work with one of his rivals. It caused a furious row between the pair, with Adam feeling as though he had been betrayed – but he had pushed Alya a step too far.

Actress Sair Khan – who plays Alya – is taking a break from the ITV soap as she heads on maternity leave to welcome her first child. Tonight, it was confirmed she would be departing Weatherfield for Dublin for a new work opportunity.

However, she left with unfinished business – as her romance with Adam Barlow seemingly has only gone from strength to strength. Tonight, Yasmeen was suspicious of how the pair felt about each other and wondered if Alya was going to miss him.

In her final scenes, Adam handed her an expensive law book and wished her the best in Dublin – but it was clear the pair were masquerading their true feelings about being apart from one another.

Sair Khan will be taking a break from the show ahead of the arrival of her baby. Announcing the news a few months back after a tough year for her and her partner, Sair shared: “Hello… It’s been a little while since posting on here which has been a real mix of emotions. With all that is happening in the world it didn’t feel like the right time to share but we also know it’s okay to keep hope and pray for peace whilst acknowledging that we feel blessed and grateful.

“Last year was a challenging time for us both with Nathan’s chondroblastoma surgery on his pelvis. It’s been a long road to recovery and still has many obstacles ahead as we deal with the spread of the tumour to his lungs.”

She added: “Life can be difficult and there’ll always be challenges to face but there are also important lessons to be learnt and gifts to be cherished. We’re so excited for the arrival of Baby Chilton in Spring 2024.”
