Coronation Street viewers were left stunned on Wednesday as they recognised newcomer Roscoe star Warren Donnelly.

The character walked into Roy Cropper’s prison cell during Wednesday’s episode, claiming to be on his side. Amid Roy being banged up for Lauren Bolton’s murder despite being innocent, he’s kept to himself and hidden away in his cell.

On Wednesday newcomer Roscoe made his presence known, leaving Roy in fear as he ordered him to leave. But Roscoe claimed they had a mutual friend and that he was there to be an ally of his, at the request of someone else. Roscoe told Roy that he was an old friend of Roy’s neighbour Stu Carpenter, and Stu had asked him to look out for Roy in prison. Roy was touched by this and passed on his thanks to Stu, with Stu confirming Roscoe’s story was correct.

Soap watchers were left distracted during the scenes as they instantly recognised Roscoe star Warren Donnelly from Shameless. The actor played Stan Waterman on the series from 2004 until 2010. Warren has also appeared in the likes of Moving On in 2011, Holby City, Cold Feet and Doctors. Warren will be joining former co-star, Sally Carman, who plays Abi Webster, on the cobbles as she played Kelly Maguire in Shameless. Other Shameless stars in Corrie include Ciarán Griffiths, who played Damon Hay and left the cobbles earlier this year.

Taking to Twitter, now X, one person said: “It’s Stan from Shameless #Corrie”, a different account put: “Remember this guy was a cop in Shameless…#corrie”, another wrote: “The copper Stan from shameless #Corrie” while a different account quipped: “Nice to see Roy get a shameless friend in Roscoe #Corrie @itvcorrie.”

It comes as while some viewers were thrilled to see that Roy had a prison pal, others were a bit unsure how genuine the newcomer was on Wednesday’s episode. Some fans couldn’t help but question if there was a different reason for him suddenly wanting to know Roy.

Taking to X, some fans predicted he could be secretly connected to former villain Griff who makes a return this week. Griff, who was a member of a far-right extremist group, is set to target Roy in prison over Lauren’s apparent murder, with him being friends with Lauren’s dad. Viewers are now wondering if Roscoe could be linked to Griff and the gang, and despite knowing Stu whether he may also be about to target Roy.
