Carla Connor (Alison King) underwent major surgery in tonight’s Coronation Street, leaving her loved ones on edge as they waited for news of her condition.

The factory boss fell ill at the beginning of the year and was diagnosed with sepsis after a trip to hospital.

The infection caused major damage to her kidney and left her in need of another transplant.

As a last resort, Carla agreed to let estranged brother Rob Donovan (Marc Baylis) get tested to see if his kidney was a match, and when the results came back positive Carla was shocked to discover that the surgery could be done the following day.

Little did Carla know, the transplant was very nearly called off before the results had even come back, when Rob attempted to make a run for it after suffering an allergic reaction.

In hospital with prison guard turned girlfriend Mandy, he planned to sneak out unnoticed – though his escape was soon thwarted by DS Lisa Swain’s (Vicky Myers) arrival.

It didn’t take her long to get the measure of both Rob and Mandy and, determined to get Carla a new kidney and in turn save her life, Lisa made a deal with the killer.

With Rob insisting that he wasn’t going back to prison, Lisa told him she would get his original conviction overturned, provided he donate his kidney.

As Carla sat in hospital waiting for the op in tonight’s episode, she was horrified when a doctor arrived to inform her that there had been a delay.

Panicking that Rob was going to pull out, she demanded to know where Lisa was, unaware that she was busy ensuring that Rob wasn’t going anywhere.

With Rob refusing to go ahead with the surgery without knowing the specific details of Lisa’s plan, she explained how she would be able to get hold of evidence that the detective in charge of Rob’s case had pressured him into confessing.

However, Rob wasn’t prepared to take her word for it, and insisted that she record everything.

He promised that as long as Lisa stuck to her word, he would delete the recording, and they would both be in the clear.

Reluctantly, Lisa agreed, before rushing back to be with Carla before she was taken down for surgery.

It was an anxious wait as Carla went under the knife, but eventually the doctor returned to inform her family that the operation had been a success, and she was just coming round from the anaesthesia.

With Carla seemingly in the clear and Rob in possession of incriminating evidence against Lisa, will they both stick to their sides of the bargain?
